Quartz Extreme and Core Image in Snow Leopard

This is a simple how-to check to determine if you have Quartz Extreme (QE) and Core Image (CI). It seems that OSX 10.6 “Snow Leopard” doesn’t state that if you have both of it enabled or not. Prior to this , in order to determine if hardware acceleration was indeed working , one would take a look at System Profiler to check if both Quartz Extreme and Core Image are enabled or not. Apple has removed this functionality in OSX 10.6. Its because , all Intel Macs (yes, including Intel GMA 950) are capable of both Quartz Extreme and Core Image. There is no need to display if both of it is supported or not.
Anyhow it has a major drawback for Hackintosh users , as there is no way to determine if hardware acceleration is indeed working or not. There is no way to tell by looking at system profiler , to check if your injectors such as NVEnabler or your EFI strings are working correctly or not. However , don’t panic and don’t yell around saying that there is no way to check if you have hardware acceleration or not. I’ve included simple steps to determine if hardware acceleration (QE/CI) is working or not

Screen shot 2009-09-04 at 1.40.46 PM
There is no way to tell if QE/CI is working with then new system profiler.

Note : Another thing to note , Apple has removed support for GeForce 5 series graphics card in Snow Leopard and as well as pre ATI X1000 series (i.e X300 , X600 , 9600 , 9550). You may get it to work with Leopard , so do try Leopard instead of Snow Leopard
1st Method
This is the easiest method of all time. All you have to do is run Chess application. Fire it up and play chess. Now if you are able to move the piece . Congraluations , hardware acceleration (QE/CI) is working.
If you aren’t pleased or if you do want to check if it really works. I’ve included other alternative methods. Do continue to read
2nd Method
Check if screensaver works. Its fairly simple to do. All you have to do is go to System preferences and then select Desktop and Screen saves. Select Screen savers tab and do test out a screensaver. If you see a blank screen , it means that your Graphics acceleration is not working !
3rd Method
Test out Dashboard (Press F12) (or F3 if you’re using Apple Aluminium Slim Keyboard). Drag and drop a widget . If you see a ripple-like effect (or cool effects) when you add a widget. Congratulations everything is working
There are other ways to test as well  for instance running DVD Player. Downloading and playing mac games such as Neverball.
4th Method (thanks to iHack)
Try Front Row. If Front Row works , QE/CI is in place , otherwise it wouldn’t work at all !

fakeSMC "MacBook Air" Release for Wind

As we all do know , the wise and mighty netkas (yes indeed) has released fakeSMC controller for us – hackint0sh users. Firstly some of us may not know what is SMC. SMC stands for System Management Control. What it does on a real mac is that it controls fan levels , tells the system when to wake , how to wake , how to shutdown , which devices to shutdown and basically it controls all other power management related stuff.  FakeSMC tries to emulate a real SMC device so that its possible for Hackint0sh users to run several programs and most importantly to fix annoying SMC errors and such during boot up. This makes it one step closer to vanilla and to be closely as real mac as possible.
Now you may ask , why on earth – would you want to recreate back  something which has already done. I’ve had several reasons to do it. Firstly , it started when i installed fakesmc.kext from netkas’ site. When I ran system profiler , I saw a SMC update for “Macbook Air”.  Therefore I want it to be like a real MacBook Air , having similar stuff to the real thing. Secondly , SMC Version 1.23f20 is needed to run CoolBook in Snow Leopard. It wouldn’t work with older versions of it. I am not sure why , it just checks for SMC Version in System profiler. If it sees anything < 1.23f20 . It will not run and it will ask you to update SMC verison of your MacBook Air

Sending Free International SMSes with Google Voice

The more reasons for me to stick with Google Voice. Today I’ve discovered that its possible to send and receive International SMSes with a Google Voice number. Best of all its free of charge. So for those of you who are looking for a way to send free International SMSes to  your buddies from other countries. Look no further – Google Voice is here for the rescue. Yep thats right , it seems that Google is not charging a cent (at this time) for sending SMSes to International numbers. Its handy though if you want to save $$$$ on your text messaging rate , if you have unlimited data. Thanks to programs such as GV Mobile for iPhone its entirely possible. I have the picture attached so that you can take a look at it on how it works. Both sides

Screen shot 2009-08-29 at 4.12.00 PM
My conversation with my very own mobile phone (aka to myself) via Google Voice. Click on the picture to have a larger view. Notice how Google stores your SMS messages

This is how it looks like on the desktop. Typing SMSes couldn’t be this easy. You can send unlimited SMSes to your pals and make full use of it. Pretty neat by Google though. Now you could mass SMSes to your friends if you plan to do send SMS. Anyhow , I am bit surprised that Google did allow its user to do this. its surprising and its indeed great. Oh , you could even sync your phone contacts with Google servers and then you can just send sms it that way. It would be much more easier
This is how it looks like from my iPhone. Generally , people think that your Google Voice number is an actual mobile phone. They could give you call or simply reply to your SMSes

So if you haven’t tried Google Voice yet. Do give it a shot. Its currently an invite only program which requires you to be in United States of America and you’ll have to own a phoneline in order to do so. However there some workarounds that you could try to get your Google Voice account. Do read about it here Personally , I wouldn’t be using it to send SMSes to Malaysia or to International numbers , as personally I wouldn’t want to abuse such services.

Installing Snow Leopard for OSX86

This is a very quick guide which I made up. Again its not prefect , I’ve made this to teach on how to restore your MacOS X Snow Leopard disk which you have bought it for $29 to a USB Stick in order for you to run Snow Leopard Retail installer and install it on your drive.
Before we begin , do make sure you have (the following stuff) :-

  • Snow Leopard 10A432 DVD aka “$29 DVD” (By the way its a full DVD and its not an upgrade DVD)
  • A working MacOS X installation (Tiger or Leopard) (even Panther would do if you’re still using PPC that is)
  • 8GB USB Stick (if you have a hotswap , another hard disk , external hard disk – by all means use them) *If you don’t have a 8GB or larger USB stick , there is alternative method) (even iPod would do)
  • -or – 128MB USB Stick (if you plan to use Retail DVD to boot) (Not recommended) -or – a blank cd
  • Common sense (yes you’ll be needing them)
  • ADDED Advantage – Have installed OSX Leopard Retail discs via boot-132
  • IRC Client for you to grab some of the required files
  • Basic knowledge of how to patch DSDT manually , troubleshooting and stuff
  • USB Keyboard/Bluetooth (It works with PS2 keyboard as well – Tested)

How To Sign Up For Google Voice Outside of USA

For the past week , I’ve been promising my readers on how to get Google Voice if you’re outside the US. Yes , I’ve managed to get Google Voice working plain though I’m located outside of the United States . So before we get into the complete how-to , lets take a look what is Google Voice all about . Google Voice is actually hybrid VOIP Service provided by Google , which allows you to make free calls any number in the US and it allows you to send and receive text messages without paying a dime or a cent. This is ideal if you have lots of friends in the US or if your family members are in US and you want to call them for free over the Internet. What is different compared to Skype and other VOIP Services is that you get a fixed number (and you’re allowed to select your own number) .

Thank You Nuffnang

Whoopie ! I am excited. After a month of waiting for the cheque to arrive , finally I did get my nuffnang cheque today . Yes thats right folks – I’ve finally managed to get my first cheque today from Nuffnang , after being like a year with them. Its kind of slow but then its worth it. Oh yeah , I know what you’re thinking , wheres the drill (the pictures) and the amount. So take a look for yourself :-

My First Cheque from Nuffnang
My First Cheque from Nuffnang - Oh yes ! Finally Moola

It did take for a while for me to get mine. I know – most of you may ask – How Can I increase my earnings in order for me to cash out a cheque just like the rest of the nuffnang folks.  Let me tell you , its very simple. Firstly , just be yourself. If you’re a blogger talking about your daily activities – go ahead and do that. Just don’t copy other people’s content exactly but without giving them any credits. Secondly , be patience – its virtue ! . You just need some time for your blog to gain its popularity. If you’re a tech guy (posting on latest stuff) , then chances are you need to find a way to get traffic by posting something different and original. Lastly , but not least – For God’s sake – don’t put messages such as “Please click my nuffnang ad – it helps me a lot” or “Please visit my sponsors”. Chances are you’ll never get your money and on top of that its annoying. No , If I were to visit your blog and you put such a thing , chances are I’ll just ignore it. Oh yeah , please don’t try to fake your clicks by asking your family member to do it or by going to a cybercafe and clicking your own ads. I’ve seen my friends who have done such a thing before ! As for me , like I’ve promised , I’ll have to donate portion of my money to charities and such (Don’t worry – pictures will be uploaded) and also to continue to write my article and keep you folks up to date on what are the latest happenings in Malaysian Broadband an technology in general !

So those who are still carving for a cheque – Don’t worry – Just believe in yourself and be an optimist and you’ll earn. Just don’t follow those crazy guides on the Internet on how they managed to get $5000 over a short period of time. ITs hoax and its MLM. The best way to earn money – is to work hard and is for you to strive for the best ! As for Nuffnang , thank you for giving Malaysians and Singaporeans a chance to earn some cash. As for my advertisers , thank you again for picking my blog ! If its possible , I Would like to thank each and every advertisers !

HackBook Wind !

As I’ve promised. I’ve finally installed OSX Leopard (and also Windows XP) on my MSI Wind U100. Thats the reason why I’ve bought it in the first place . Macbook Air is certainly overpriced (Imagine paying 7,000 Malaysian Ringgit for it as opposed to 1,500 Malaysian Ringgit for a MSi Wind).

HackBook Wind
The beauty of OSX on a netbook

Anyway , I’ve to say that almost everything works with the MSI Wind U100 . Anyway everything works , including sleep , bluetooth , wifi ,full graphics acceleration. The only thing which doesn’t work is internal microphone. But I am sure that it would work someday

The reason why I wrote this blog entry is to just to expose and explain and do a bit of comparison of running MacOS X on a PC. There are many reasons on why one would run OSX on a PC. For instance , if you want to test MacOS before buying a real mac , if you can’t afford a real mac (I love people who own an i7 but say that they can’t afford a real mac) , or you simply hate buying hardware from Apple. These are some of the reasons why people try OSX86 on a PC. As for hardware wise , a mac still looks like a mac and a hack (its a term used when OSX installed on a PC) is still a regular PC. Just take a look at the picture which I’ve snapped

HackBook Wind v iBook G4
HackBook Wind and iBook G4 together

Anyway its been pretty good using OSX with the Wind. I’ll be writing a tutorial soon on how to install it , step by step and who knows even a video tutorial . For now , I highly recommend you to read this tutorial on how to install OSX

Protecting your WordPress against signups !

Lately , I have been noticing that a lot of people are registring in my blog. These don’t seem to be like genuine users but rather hackers and spambots trying to register in my blog as subscriber (I did not even notice that I ticked the option for folks to register) . This isn’t so great because I am worried about folks trying to hack into the system as you do know that if we leave a door opened , chances are someone would try their best to “Crack” into it and do an havoc. This is what happened to my friend , HeHeHunter with his blog whereby a hacker managed to get in and “delete” his data ! Luckily he had a backup for him to restore (Thank cPanel for that !).

Just about everyday I get notices on new user registration. These users don't seem to be like genuine users but rather sounds like to be spambots

So today I’ll be teaching you on how to disable it. Its pretty simple actually , so if you are the sole writer of the blog (like me) , then you don’t need to have people to register to your “blog” just to get updates. If they want to get updates of the blog , they could do it via FeedBurner or just subscribe to RSS feeds and such !
Untick the 'Anyone can Register' checkbox !

First thing first , login to your WordPress configuration menu and go to Settings (General Settings) and simply untick the “Anyone can register”. Now that saves you the hassle from annymous , spambots , potential hackers from registering and try to get into your system. It just makes it harder for them to crack into. Not to mention that with the numbers of scripts that are growing in the Internet , anyone could basically use it and hack into the system. These folks are known as script-kiddies . So why should we give way to them. So if you care about your content and your blog , its best for you to secure it up !

Tuning your P1 Modem

Wow , this is my first post in the month of April and its about time that I did one. Actually one of my readers made me to write this post. Basically he wanted to know how to tune his P1 Modem and to position it properly in order to get better speed.
First thing first , you need to connect directly to your PC. You must bypass your router (I’ll guide you later on how to get it to play along with your router and port forward such). Assuming that we have got it to work (i.e Internet works , the modem shows a solid green or amber light). Fire up your web browser (Internet Explorer/Safari/Firefox/Google’s own browser) and go to (or just click on the link and enter your username/password) . You’ll be prompted to enter the username and password.

Username : admin
Password  : admin123

Now lets take a look at the main screen. This concerns us the most. We are going to use these indicators to help us to position the modem in order to get good speed. The light indicator doesn’t tell us much , it just tells good or bad but it doesn’t tell you how good or how bad. These values are commonly used by engineers or those who are in the telecommunications industry to determine how good is the signal. It tells them more then the light indicator !
