Honest and Brutal Thoughts on Smartphones Offered by Youth Communication Package

Few days ago , I wrote an article stating my thoughts on RM 200 smartphone rebate which was offered by the government of Malaysia. I have just discovered that my blog article was featured in MalaysiaKini  (alternatively read here for free) which is great and a good thing for my humble blog. Anyhow , it seems that MCMC has released a list of RM 500 smartphones , and I’ve managed to get the list via Amanz.my (Malaysian Tech Blog in Malay language). Here are is the list and my quick response on you should get the phone or not. If you want to know the reasons behind it , feel free to read whereby I explain what are the drawbacks/benefits of each phone

  • Alcatel One Touch Inspire 2 (NOT RECOMMENDED)
  • The Buzz Phone (NOT RECOMMENDED)
  • Huawei Ideos X3  (NOT RECOMMENDED)
  • Ninetology Black Pearl II  (UNKNOWN/CAN’T RATE/BENEFIT OF DOUBT)
  • Nokia 2730 (GREY ZONE)
  • Nokia 7230 (GREY ZONE)
  • Nokia Asha 305 (RECOMMENDED)
  • Nokia Asha 308 (RECOMMENDED)
  • Nokia C2-03 (GREY ZONE)
  • Nokia Lumia 610 (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
  • Samsung Galaxy Chat (RECOMMENDED)
  • Samsung Galaxy Mini  (NOT RECOMMENDED)
  • Samsung Galaxy Pocket  (NOT RECOMMENDED)
  • Samsung Galaxy Y  (NOT RECOMMENDED)
  • Sony Xperia Tipo (RECOMMENDED)

Thinking of getting any of the smartphone – fear not. I have done my research and even had the opportunity to review one of the smartphones. This would be brief and simple and it would give you an idea of what kind of smartphone that you are expecting and my recommendation which is either a yes or no. Before that I would once again recommend you to read this article which says why Cheap Android smartphones are bad
Alcatel One Touch Inspire 2 – Never heard of this brand before. But after digging up in the Internet , i have stumbled across to this page. Looks like  a Basic Android Smartphone with cheap stuff inside and running an out-dated version of Android. Stay Clear . DO NOT GET THIS PHONE/NOT RECOMMENDED
The Buzz Phone (aka Yes 4G Buzz) – I have reviewed Yes 4G stuff over the past and in fact it helped me when I was in Australia to make calls and things like that. It is great to have a Voice Over IP. However having a basic smartphone is not really worth it. Firstly , you are running on their own system (limits the apps you can have) , secondly it only works in Yes 4G areas (so if you move out of Yes 4G coverage area you phone is dead) . It is not really worth it , it may be worth it if it came along with Android or something else. DO NOT GET THIS PHONE/NOT RECOMMENDED
HTC Wildfire – I was reading the reviews , some of them say it is alright and others say it is a bad phone. The problem is with HTC and I am not a big fan of HTC and plus you are stucked with Android 2.1 . Unless you are willing to void the warranty by flashing to third party firmwares , then it is possible. I have seen ROMs for Anrdoid 4.0 on this device but it requires you to root and install third party Android system. Not worth the hassle and plus HTC does not even provide any official system updates. DO NOT GET THIS PHONE/NOT RECOMMENDED
Huawei Ideos X3 – I was fortunate enough to test out this phone at CrazyJohns (an awesome place in Australia where you can find the best phone deals , best phone with best plans). It was going for $89 AUD with OPTUS or Virgin (I can’t recall) and now it is going for FREE . This phone is very old and it runs on Android 2.x . Best part it can’t even run any graphics intense games , running Angry Birds causes a huge lag.  DO NOT GET THIS PHONE/NOT RECOMMENDED
LG Optimus L3 – No idea , CNET review says it is bad. But I am giving benefit of the doubt , but keep in mind that it is still a low end smartphone but I am not sure how it behaves , one thing for sure it kind of looks sexy and slim and a second phone. Will it be an awesome phone ? Probably not. But again untill we get our hands on this phone and test it out. I can’t say much about it. BENEFIT OF DOUBT/TBA
Ninetology Black Pearl II/Ninetology Palette – Not much review about this product as it is because it is made in Malaysia. I have seen the specification , it sort of looks good. It looks alright although Palette looks much like Huawei Ideos X3 and other low-end smartphone. However the Black Pearl II looks pretty neat. I have not seen one of those so I can’t comment how they work or how they perform. BENEFIT OF DOUBT/TBA
Nokia 2730/7230/C2-03 – Ah yes Classic Nokia phones. They work alright , but they aren’t your typical Android smartphone. I mean Symbian is dead , unless you do not mind using this phone because of long battery life an durable. This is the phone for you. It may not appeal a lot of people because you can’t install and play games on it and do lots more. It is in the grey zone, it is recommended to get it , if you like basic and simple to use smartphone. GREY ZONE
Nokia Asha 305/308 – What more do you want – Nokia Asha offers you dual SIM , that itself is a huge advantage. I believe the Nokia Asha 308 comes with pre-loaded EA Games such as FIFA and all , so you do not have to spend any money on Google Play Store or something in buying these games. Plus I have seen these games running on the phone. It is smooth. It does all the basic stuff you want , Twitter/Facebook/WhatsApp and even Angry Birds too . I recommend this phone on people who are planning to have two numbers and want in one phone. RECOMMENDED
Nokia Lumia 610 – Compared to getting crappy Android phones , this seems much of a better choice. You sort of get a premium-like phone at unbeatable price. Windows Phone does provide a good experience , however keep it in mind that it would serve your daily needs such as light gaming , tweeting , whatsapp , taking photos and checking out Facebook. However the storage is limited to 8GB and you cannot expand the storage at all . It may not be a music lovers phone because you would take up space easily when you start storing all your music. However despite that , it comes with a huge screen , decent camera and a good operating system. To be honest , I think that this phone is much more worth compared to the rest – HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Samsung Galaxy Chat – It is much like a Blackberry except it is made by SAMSUNG. The beauty of is that you get a QWERTY keyboard. As the name suggests it is meant for Chat. People who love to spend their time on Twitter , Facebook Chat , WhatsApp and even SMS would love this phone. You get Android 4.0 (which is great)  , a QWERTY keyboard and a decent camera. However keep it in mind that this phone is not meant for gamers or people who like to load up their phone with games. The screen resolution is too weak meaning that games would ugly or may not even work. I would recommend this for social-media junkies and plus with Android 4.0 which is great – RECOMMENDED
Samsung Galaxy Mini – Do not be fooled by the name. It is not the awesome galaxy in a small variant. It is pretty much an utter crap. That’s about it. It runs on a low-resolution screen , old android version and nothing else. It is much like Ideos X3, One Touch Inspire 2 – a crap Andorid phone. In fact do not buy it at all , it just ruins your smartphone experience – NOT RECOMMENDED
Samsung Galaxy Pocket – Much like mini , the screen is smaller and specifications are bad enough. You can’t even whatsapp decently or even watch porn on the screen at all. This phone is only great if you plan to use your smartphones in receving or placing calls. But if you want to do that , Nokia 3310 does a far better job compared to this – NOT RECOMMENDED
Samsung Galaxy Y – I am not sure if SAMSUNG is pushing out every single phone out there. They should just stay with their flagship models (some may disagree). Much like the other two  aka Samsung Galaxy Mini/Pocket it is yet another crappy phone. There is nothing much you could do on this as well – NOT RECOMMENDED
Sony Xperia Tipo – It seems to me that is it worth it. At least you get Android 4.0 , the specifications are somewhat decent and it looks alright. I have read reviews and people do say that it looks to be a pretty good phone with a decent battery life. Sure the camera and few other things may not be great. But hey it is a SONY , with ICS and phone that looks pretty decent and runs current Android System !  – RECOMMENDED
ZTE Acqua – I am surprised to see.  Anyhow I have reviewed this phone myself and I have to say that this phone is much more of an entertainment phone compared – you get a huge screen , 1Ghz Processor (which is speedy) and ICS Vanilla which is all great. The only one major disadvantage is the camera , for some reason camera quality is very poor and it takes ages to load the camera. However if you are looking for a great entertainment phone with loud speakers and clear screen – this is the phone to get – HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
So there you go people. I have compiled my list , hopefully it would help you out in making your decision. I just hope that they lift the RM 500 restriction and allow us to get any smartphone that wish. I am quite sure that some of us are saving up for a Galaxy Note/Nexus 4/Galaxy S3/iPhone 5

Philips AquaTouch AT750 Review Part Four: 100% Aqua

This is going to be my next epic. Just kidding , if you haven’t read my Philips Aqua Touch Review , please do so now. Read from part 1 so that you’ll understand the whole journey. This week , we take a look at how Philips AquaTouch even improvises lives of celebrity. The celebrity is no other than  Kuah Jenhan. Now some of you may not know who is he , well basically he is a part of MACC , no not Malaysian Anti Corruption Agency – it is  Malaysian Association of Chinese Comedian.
Kuah Jenhan is Russell Peters of Malaysia , basically you can do a YouTube search and watch his comedies. Anyhow , he is also an ambassador for Philips AquaTouch in Malaysia. Here take a look on how Kuah Jenhan uses his Philips AquaTouch
So yeah , there you have it even celebrities love the AquaTouch 😛 I am just posting this to give you another reason to convince yourself or your loved ones to get an AquaTouch
If that is not convincing  enough , continue to read on
Is it really “AquaTouch” ?  As in 100% Waterproof
This is where I wanted to find out if it is indeed 100% water proof. I know that some companies tend to lie to their customers about their product being able to do it all and that comes with extra stuff. Philips did tell me that they have personally tested with up to depth of 4 meters. So I did a little test of my own which you can view it to see if it is indeed water-proof , you can see the video for yourself
I have not edited in any way , it is straight from my iPhone 4 itself
I have also not tested with soap water , oil , petrol , some chemical liquids and I am assume that it will be all be working. Oh keep in mind , let the AquaTouch be completed dried before plugging in into the charger , just to be on a safer side.

What’s next ?

I would be concluding. I have received comments from my readers (both positive and negatives alike). I’ll sum it all up and say if it is indeed worth the money. Trust me you do not want to miss about that
You could also vote for me here , well by voting you would make yourself feel better and you give me a chance to get a complete make-over
Alternatively if you want AquaTouch for free , you could participate in #Philips50Shaves competition , just head over here to find out more (Be sure to like their Facebook Page)
I would like to say that its not a sponsored post by Philips Malaysia but more towards my experience with the Philips AquaTouch itself. The review can be negative or positive as they have spent out that each reviewers have their freedom of expression to express their thoughts. Stay tuned for that

My Thoughts on RM 200 Smartphone Rebate

Back in September, the government announced a RM 200 rebate for Youths who are between the age of 21-30 with a monthly income of RM 3,000 and below. A good move which I have applauded in my review of ZTE Acqua. Today , Amanz.my released the news stating that there are some strings attached to the Pakej Komunikasi Belia (Youth Communication Package).

Image taken from MCMC Website

  • Warganegara Malaysia berumur 21 tahun hingga 30 tahun. (Check , you must be between 21-30 years old)
(Ouch !)
  • Hanya satu telefon pintar untuk satu belia. (Again this is resonable and to prevent abuses)

Clause 3 and 4 states that that only smartphones which are priced RM 500 and below are applicable for Rebate. Furthermore  you’ll have to be existing subscriber or register for a new broadband plan with any of the telco that participated in the program. The list can be found in this web-site from MCMC. It is in Malay
Well that is for the news. Now what are you going to read in the next few sections are my personal thoughts which I have written and that I would like to share with my readers
Raise The Limit To RM 1,000
We all know that RM 500 phones are pretty much weak and cheap phones. Generally , they either run old and outdated versions of Android and the touch-screens aren’t great. In fact you can’t do much about this , an example of this would be Samsung Galaxy Y. Yes it is marketed as Samsung Galaxy but you sort of get a half-baked phone. The problem of buy old and outdated phones such as Galaxy Y is that you would not get support from SAMSUNG or even upgrades to latest version of Android. That is alright for some people as mainly they would use to WhatsApp,SMS and do light surfing. But for most of the youths out there it sort of limits the experience you get with Smartphone. There is an article in ExtremeTech on why you should not buy cheap Android phones.
So that leaves option with either going with BlackBerry or Nokia which I would think would be a better option compared to Android offering. But then it is too early to say on how telcos are going to play their part. They may able to subsidize some decent smartphone into RM 500 range. All I can say now is we’ll probably have to wait
Plans ?  Rates ? Billing ?
I am sure telcos would love to bound you for a 2 year contract or 1 year contract. The question is how they are going to implement it. Malaysia is a Prepaid nation. An article from MalaysianWireless shows this. Just take a look at the number of prepaid users out there. The question is will these youth be willing to be tied down to postpaid. Most of the youth prefer prepaid because you are able to control your usage. Suppose if you have ran out of  talk time , you could still use the phone and still not be overcharged. In postpaid there is not a proper way to say “halt” , I do not want to spend more.
I am quite sure that telco would find a plan out. I would predict that generally telco would ask you to pay say RM 600-800 after the rebate , which includes phone and probably a 1 year worth of data usage and sms/calls. If you want more you would have to top it up. If they do something like this it would be a win-win situation. So once you have ran out of your monthly quota , you could still top it up. But again it depends on how each telcos play their game and how it works
Malaysian-made phone ? Malaysian Content Developers ?
Frankly speaking , I would love to see a phone which is made in Malaysia. I am not talking about taking some generic Android phones from China and putting it a sticker. I am talking about actually making one. Pairing up with a manufacturer and releasing a special smartphone device just for this purpose. I would certainly purchase this phone if it is good. Now I hope that they don’t release a RM 100 Chinese Android phone and put a price tag of RM 499.
Some of you may say why a Malaysian made phone ? Well this opens up more content and application developers which is good for everyone. We can have more local tailored applications and local developers may have an option of having their application being hosted in 1Malaysia App Store (suppose if it exists)
The thing about having a special Malaysian made phone is that it must been executed perfectly and at the same time offering options for our local Application Developers. If you think our local Application developers are a joke , just take a look at few such as Teranto Tech. We clearly need a platform for these developers to publish and get advertising.

Again it is very early for me to judge. I applaud the move , however in order for this program to be successful , few things which I have mentioned would probably have to be researched. If it is done perfectly , voila it is a win-win situation for everyone , for the government , for the rakyat , for the telcos and even content/application developers as well. I just pray that this program would be a success and it would give opportunity for more people to get themselves hooked into Angry Birds and the World of Smartphone 😛
What are you thoughts about this – feel free to post a comment or hit me up in Twitter

New Changes to prasys.info & Season's Greetings

Ho Ho Ho – Happy Holidays folks. I would like to take this opportunity to wish Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of my readers. I do pray that 2013 would be the year for us – exciting new things for us to discover and who knows 2013 could be a year that is something very special for all of us.
The reason why I am writing this blog post is that , it is time for prasys.info to change from a humble blog into something more. I always wanted my site to grow. What I started as a simple hackint0sh guide has evolved over the years . I was fortunate enough to be given a chance to review some of the coolest products and even managed to organize a giveaway . With the momentum , I would like to take my site to the next level and in order to do that I would have to do some changes. I mean if we do not embrace changes , eventually things would die out (I have learned this from Gordon’s Kitchen Nightmares) and I cannot live in the past.
I’ll be introducing a couple of changes. Firstly , the most noticeable change that you might notice is the way how I have categorized things. It is going to be a niche blog on technology except from time to time , I would be blogging about Malaysian issues or something which I think I need to share my thoughts. Please let me know what do you think of the new layout and the new way of organizing into things. If you want , I could cover additional topics such as Computer Science related matters as well. Please do post a comment
Secondly , I have introduced a Facebook Fan Page. There is a reason to this. In order for me to organize giveaways , generally sponsors require me to tell them the numbers and they care about how many likes and how popular I am. Of course I could show them my hit counter and things like that but sponsors do want more. Plus I would like to give away things to my readers and to the people actually. By having a Facebook page , I hope that I can communicate and get the numbers that these sponsors are looking for. If you have the time , all I am asking you for Christmas is a simple like in my Facebook Page . That’s about it and I promise you that I would not spam you at all
Thirdly , I plan to give back to the people as well. Many people have helped me and guided me on making this blog. For 2013 , I’ll be repaying kindness by allowing Guest Posting. What it simply means that I am not taking spammers or what-so-ever but for people who want to post quality posts and for their sites to gain exposure. Who knows – some companies may look for you to review their products ? The possibility are endless . I am still working on this and I would probably discuss with few people that I know on how to set this up and manage.
Lastly , that is about it. There would be more changes. If I ever get back into hackint0sh , I would be sure to update or post about it. Thank you once again for taking your time and reading my blog. I wish you all the best in 2013 and enjoy your holidays !

Windows 8 Storage Spaces – First Look

Windows 8 (and Server 2012) includes a ton of great new features  and one of the new features is (I’m not talking about the Start Menu , I still hate the new Start Menu Storage Spaces, a new Windows utility that allows you to connect multiple data storage devices , regardless of being Internal or External such as USB Hard Disks.
So What Is Storage Space ? What about benefits ?
Now Storage Space itself is not new , Microsoft first introduced Storage Space for Windows Home Server version 1 and it is known as Drive Extender  and it was developed by the Server Team (which should be reliable and good). The beauty of storage space is that you can combine all these hard disks and create “pools” such as “Pictures” , “Movies” , “Documents” and they work just like any other hard disk. Of course this kind of technology is not something new , in fact RAID (Redudant Array of Independent Disks)allows you to the same thing and it offers variety of different settings and in Linux , you would have LVM . What Microsoft is done is that they made it easier for to combine multiple storage system which spans across different mediums (Internal & External) which offers redundancy and performance.
In simpler terms , imagine you can create a 3TB of storage pool (and you have 1TB of hard disk but you have plans of buying 2TB hard disk later). So what you can do is that you can create a storage pool of 3TB of hard disk with your current 1TB. Now as the storage nears the capacity , Storage Pool would alert you saying that you are low on capacity and you need to buy more storage to store. It is simple as that. Now you may ask , what is the purpose of using Storage Space
Simple , imagine your steam game collection , now on a normal hard disk when you run of space , you’ll have to delete and move , now with storage space , you just need to keep adding more hard disk without worrying about relocating and other stuff. Your storage grows with you as you expand. Plus with the option of providing mirror , it keeps your data safe
So How Does It Work ?
Just Like RAID , Windows 8 Storage Spaces offers three sort of configuration
Stripe Data (RAID 0) – Just like in RAID , Storage Space would stripe data across a pool (several hard drives) and what you get is improved performance as Data is now written on multiple hard disks , this would give you a boost in hard disk read/write performance. However keep in mind that if one of the hard disks in the pool fails , your entire data is gone
Mirror (RAID 1) (Two/Three Way) – Storage Space offers RAID 1-like mirroring. So suppose if you have two hard disks in your pool and you have created a Mirror Drive , basically content are duplicated across both drives. So suppose if one of the drives fail , your data would be still accessible on the other drive . Three way offers extra protection as data is duplicated across three hard disks not just two
Parity (RAID 3/5)  -Blocks are striped just like RAID 0 , but now you have a parity bit (parity bit are like fail over things , so for instance , if Disk 1 stores 0 and Disk 1 stores 1 , by using the principle of XOR , the parity disk would store 1). The beauty of is that suppose if one of your hard disk fails , your data is still safe. All you have to do is get a new hard disk , fit it in and it is automatically recovered. It uses the beauty of XOR , it is able to restore data in lost disk
Keep in mind that in order to use Storage Space , data on existing disk would be lost completely and Storage Space will not work on the hard disk whereby the operating system resides.
So which one do I use ?
It really depends on what you plan to do. In my configuration (on Server 2012 which is my File Server ) , this is how I have did. What I did is that I have added all 3 hard disks to create a pool. From the pool , I have created three different storage system (virtual disks) for different purposes
Documents – To Store Important Documents such as work related file or scanned copies of my passport. I just want to ensure that the data is replicated to all of my 3 disks. I did a 3-way mirroring. I do not care about performance , as I just want the data to be reliable
Pictures (I should rename it to Movies/Old Stuff/Archive) – These are stuffs which I plan to store them but do not have any plans to frequently access them but I want to ensure that they are protected against a disk failure. So in an event of disk failure , the data can be reconstructed by swapping out the failed drive and putting in a new one. However keep in mind that using parity has heavy performance penalty , it is recommended to be used as drive which you do not frequently access because of the parity calculations
Stuff – I use Raid 0 here , the reason is simple , I care about getting extended storage space (combining both of my 1TB) . However I do not care about the things which are stored in this virtual volume , which mainly includes downloaded things such as Movies , Songs. Suppose if one of my drive fails , I would lose my entire collection.

These are my storage space settings. However in Windows 8 things are much more simplified , but the core principle remains the same. It is not complicated as how it is being done in Server 2012 but simply straight forward. Just go to Control Panel in Windows 8 and you can add drives very easily – bam

What are the advantages and drawbacks of using Storage Space?

Now let us talk about the positive aspects of Storage Spaces

Flexibility – Storage Space provides thin providing that allows you to create a volume with the size larger than the total capacity of all your actual hard disk. You can create a 5TB hard disk by only having 1TB of hard disk at the moment. As you run out of free space, Windows prompts you to put in more disk before you are allowed to use the storage pool.

Easy To Use – Storage Space provides straight forward way of setting up your own pool. You don’t have to go to BIOS or do complicated things like how you would setup RAID. It provides easy to use interface in setting it up which makes it very easy to setup your own storage pool

Provides Fault Tolerance – Storage Space provides fault tolerance against hard disk failures for end-users , this is pretty much like the earlier advantage. Now home users (like you and me) could have enterprise-like feature which is bundled for free. There is no need to backup into two different hard disk manually. Storage Space takes care of that

There are some disadvantage of using Storage Space
Hard Disk Requires Formatting – To add a hard disk into storage pool , Windows will format existing hard disk , so if you have important data , you would have to move it out. It does not work with existing hard disk which already contains data
Complexity in Recovering Data  – Well if your Windows 8/Server 2012 computer does not work. You are pretty much dead , you can connect these storage-space hard disk into another Windows 8/Server 2012 computer and pray that it sees it and you are able to recover. If you try to plug them in a Linux/Windows 7/MacOS computer , they are un-readable
Performance Hit – It is not as fast as hardware RAID controller especially if you use parity as parity count pretty much hits hard on the hard disks and CPU (in order for it to calculate the parity). Now RAID controller offloads the calculation by having a dedicated CPU which does exactly that. Storage Space uses your computer CPU to do the calculation.
Bottom Line
