MacOSX 10.6.5 Update

Apple has released MacOSX 10.6.5 update for OSX. Basically it includes a bunch of bug fixes and additional things which may interest a lot of people

  • Intel Core i3 Support (Apple has added supported for Intel Core i3 processors which means that the System is able to identify the processor correctly and Core i3 processors can use native kernel)
  • Updated Graphics Card Drivers (Two new framebuffers for ATI HD5xxx card and improved OpenGL performance on Nvidia card especially when running games such as Left 4 Dead 2. Fermi should be supported )
  • SD Card Support (exFAT is added , plus there is a new SD Card Information – As for compatibly with laptop internal SD Card reader , it will be updated soon)

How to Update
Backup , backup and backup. At least – just backup your entire Extensions folder which is located in System folder. Keep a copy of it , and please keep a copy of your EFI partition extensions
Download OSX 10.6.5 Combo updater (Yes , I know its kind of huge , please do not use the system updater).  Before you go and run the installer , please make sure that offending kexts such as SleepEnabler.kext  are removed. For more details , please refer to my earlier update guide
Before updating , ask yourself this question. Are you willing to take the risk of breaking a working system. If you’re a risk taker , please proceed on with the update. Else , I recommend you to wait , till a lot of people have experiment it , especially if you’re using your Hackint0sh for production use (i.e music , iPhone development , etc)
Please keep EmpireEFI CD/nawcom bootCD/iBoot or whatever Boot CD or disk that you’ve used to create. If you’re using NFI by merklot , feel free to use that as well. You need something to boot just incase if your system goes FUBAR. This is very very very important. I repeat , its very important ! I REPEAT , ITS VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE A HANDY DANDY BOOT CD. PLEASE DO NOT COME AND CRY SAYING THAT YOUR SYSTEM HAS BEEN MESSED UP AND YOU’RE UNABLE TO BOOT TO IT !
For Netbook users you may have to boot using your old kernel. Bear in mind that OSX 10.6.5 ! If you insist on upgrading , just backup your old kernel and boot using your backup kernel. You may experience broken USB , to retrify this , visit nawcom’s blog for more details or scroll down
As for AMD users or legacy Intel users (i.e Pentium D , Pentium 4). Please wait as I’ll write a guide for you
For EFI users or those who have did their own DSDT and made their system as near vanilla as possible , proceed on with update. It doesn’t conflict anything !

Post-Installation Issues
These are some issues faced by people , after updating. I’ll update them
Broken Keyboard/Mouse – Simply use your boot CD , boot it up and re-install PS2 Keyboard/Mouse drivers using myHack. Alternatively google search for Vodooo PS2 Drivers and re-install them manually !
Broken Sound (AppleHDA) – You may have to re-install patched AppleHDA.kext. From your backed up extension folder , simply re-install AppleHDA.kext either via Terminal or tools such as Kext Utility or you may drag and drop the kext to Extensions and run pfix !
Broken WiFi (Broadcom/Atheros) – Simply get the b43patcher and run or use your old IO80211Family.kext and re-install it back. It should be fixed
Broken USB (Very important)– Boot via Boot CD and download patched USB Drivers from here. Apply them , it should fix (Mirror #1 , insanelyMac – iGomi has posted the kext and step by step solution)
Broken nvidia Graphics Card (non-Fermi) (i.e HDMI is not working) – Just simply get my patched nvidia drivers and re-install
Broken Sleep Thank you OmniAtlas for posting an awesome solution. Just scroll down and read his comment

  1. Hi, thanks for this warning, is it the same warning if i had install a retail version of osx? or is it only recommended with a distro version?
    Thanks.

  2. Apparently the patched sleepenabler for 10.6.5 only works for 32bit SL.
Anyone have a work around? Right now sleep will be broken for SL64x.

  3. so i updated but lost wifi – it says no airport card installed, i basically removed sleepenabler.kext from the extensions and hit software update.
2 hours later my system was booted in 10.6.5 and everything worked except the wifi card.
    any suggestions on the kexts?

  4. Hi, i was thinking i had the vanilla kernel but i updated to 6.5 and now my usbs dont work, should i re install mac or is there another way to make my mouse and usb keyboard again?
    Thanks xD

Without us knowing what kind of c you have there is no one in the world that can help you, at least post cpu, motherboard model etc. and the best way to find your kext is to look for the product id of your wifi card
    good day!

  6. The card i have is here

i run a core 2 dua 2.7 GHZ with intel mother board 4gb ram (its an old machine i had and converted it into a HTPC of sorts)
i ran kaylaway for tiger then used original snow leopard disk to upgrade and the EP45UD3P OSx86 v3 to transfer settings, removed sleepenabler and updated to 10.6.5 – now everything works perfectly – but no airport card detected,
Please anyone help, i have a backup of all my old kexts – if i need any although this card didnt need any kexts when i installed it.
    Much appreciated

I cant install anything since mu mouse or keyboard dont work xP i tried -x but cant move anything x(

if you have screen sharing enabled , u can use another mac to install the kexts – and reboot – or use a bluetooth mouse – if you have a working bluetooth

  9. Pradeesh :
@ozl , do you have the old IO80211Family.kext if so install them back. I’ll add a note !

have tried the old kext no luck, also tried bcm enabler- still ” no airport card detected, im screwed!

I dont mean to spam your blog, but i managed to get network to work using a lan cable to the router, now in my network it shows that Airport is connected, but in the status bar, “no airport card detected” if anyone has a permanent fix for this i would appreciate it.
    Thanks

  11. Pradeesh :
@bharat It could be related to IOPCIFamily.kext . Are you using a hp notebook by any chance ?

Nope that didnt do it either , funny thing is that when the os boots up, i do see the wifi bars but then it becomes blank and no wifi card installed,
Also, with my onboard lan connected to the router, i get KP’s and need to reboot , might as well go back to 10.6.4. Although everything else works fine.

  12. I upgrade…no sound..so fixed that, everything else seemed ok a part from graphics card (GeForce 9800 GT), can’t seem to change color profiles and recalibrating does nothing. Tried your patched nvidia drivers and ended up with what looked like 1bit color, just black and white blocks…any advice would be great.
    thanks

  13. Oh well, i had to go back to 10.6.3 xP i used the boot disc to install mac again on the same drive so it deleted the new kexts and now im on to update to 10.6.5 again xD lets hope it works
@bharat it seems it would be better for you to go back to 6.4 or wait a little more and see if some other person on a forum can help you faster xP
    Good day people!

  14. Ok, went back to 6.3 then installed Update to 6.5, followed the http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=236748&st=20&gopid=1582747&# guide and now i have Kernel panics, tried booting normally and then with nawcoms mod cd v03
Last thing saying booting with -x or -f even -s:
    Firewire power conservation disabled (2)
Firewire OHCI Vendor ID 1106 ID 3403 PCI now Active GUID 0010dc000195176a max speed 5400
then the waiting for root device msg

    Thanks for your help! xD

  15. i thought i borked my install when it kp’ed after upgrading and rebooting. restored 1064 kernel it is booted fine but lost my usb mouse and bt keyboard via usb dongle. installed 1064 iousbfammily and iousbmassstorageclass kexts and got back my usb mouse. however, bt keyboard would not work. reverted back to 1065 kernel and chown/chmod correctly. now i got back my bt keyboard. all is fine now.

I have a similar PCI airport card, BCM4320. I have similar problem too, it does not recognize airport card. I found if you boot in safe mode (-x boot option) my airport card is detected and works fine.
So I tried to find the delta of kexts loaded in safe vs normal mode. Following are the extensions that are not loaded in safe mode compared to normal mode. Anyone, any clues?

  17. Pradeesh: well the irc is no help, just cuz i have no clue and need help they take it as insults and now i banned plastikman is no help at all

  18. Dear Prasys,
Have followed your excellent instructions and after initial sleepenabler-enduced KP I removed it and now everything works beautifully on my GigabyteG965P-s3/C2D 2.13 w/th Geforce 9800/512 MB with almost no tweaks using Nawcom 0.3. However the solution of OmniAtlas seems a bit too-technical for me. Can you be so kind as to offer simple explanation and walk-through? Keep up the good work! Stoian
