Nawcom’s BootCD – The sucessor to EmpireEFI

As we know , EmpireEFI , tonyx86 boot cd and other boot cd variants has helped a lot of us to get retail OSX installation in our beloved Dell Computers (and clones alike). What nawcom has done with his boot cd is that he has taken entirely it into next level. His bitchblog may seem a bit technical. So I am here to translate that to plain english on simply what it means. It simply means that now you can install OSX alongside with Windows on a MBR partition without the need of formatting the entire drive as GPT and using complicated procedures to dual boot. Plus on top of that , nawcom has added support for a variety of graphics card  (well almost all which Chameleon native Graphics Injector supports) as opposed to my EmpireEFI. It will automatically detect your hardware through I/O Registry and post-instructions will be posted over at Desktop , thus making it a lot easier for you to get to know about your hardware and to determine if its supported. For your information , I’ll be working with nawcom to come up with an awesome boot CD which shall supersede EmpireEFI.

UPDATE #1 – Updated version can be obtained from here (changelog + details) Nawcom has included two kernels in his BootCD , a modbin patched kernel and the legacy kernel (aka chocolate kernel which supports a lot of processors from AMD up to latest Intel series) . Anyway enough of the long and lengthy explanation , lets get to business shall we Installation instructions & Download Instructions

PS  – Its almost  the same as EmpireEFI. All you would have to do is :-

Requirements : MacOS X 10.6.x installation disc (OSX 10.6.3/OSX 10.6.0 discs would work fine , however it will not work with recovery discs of Macs of any kind) , a CD-Burner , A compatible PC If you face any problems , I’ve written a mini troubleshooting guide as well (just scroll down) 1. Burn the ISO (which you could download it from here (OLD version) or here (UPDATED VERSION/RECOMMENDED) , alternatively mirrors/latest version can be obtained from nawcom directly

Kindly burn it at the slowest speed using Nero, Windows default ISO burning tool , OSX or whatever your favorite burning software is. 2.. Make sure you’ve set your BIOS to boot from CD. Simply insert the ISO which we have burnt (for connivence sake , we will be calling it the swap disk from now onwards) and be sure to boot from the swap disk.

3. If everything goes okay , you’ll be presented with a graphical boot loader. Please be sure to read what is stated in the screen. Yes , take your time and read first

Afterwards , simply eject the disc. Insert your genuine OSX installation disc and hit F5. If everything goes okay , you should see OSX installation disc in the menu. Select that and keep your fingers crossed. If everything goes well , you should be in installation menu. Install as usual , but be sure to remove unwanted stuff such as printer drivers , additional languages (if you dont use them) as it would increase the installation time and would probably cause the installation to hang. TIP/NOTE– Another tip is during installation , please be sure to move your mouse to provide some activity. There have been cases whereby installation would just lock up for some reason due to no activity.

4. If everything went well , simply reboot with the swap disc and select your newly installed OSX partition.  After which you’ve booted to desktop , be sure to use the myHack 1.1.4 package on the boot CD, located in the Post Install pkgs folder on the boot CD. Read the Important Information Dialog!! Don’t forget to select Customize to install the support your hardware needs! – Reboot and pray that it works

Troubleshooting Guide

If you’re getting a Black Screen/Black screen with a curosr , then simply use the following command GraphicsEnabler=Yes After swapping the CD with the DVD and before you boot up the OS X Install DVD. Basically its at the time whereby OSX Installation DVD shows up , simply type GraphicsEnabler=Yes (alternatively you may hit tab and type it in the command prompt) If you have any questions , doubts , simply post it here and I’ll try my best to get in touch with you to resolve your issue

  2. Hi,

I am totally new here since I have been exposed to Windows in my entire life so I want to try something new. I am trying to install OSX Snow Leopard 10a432 (I’m not sure of the version) on my laptop which is a HP Compaq CQ40-310AU with AMD Turion 2.1 GHz 2GB Ram 320GB SATA HDD and ATI Radeon HD 3200. I used the latest swap disk from nawcom and was able to load the OSX bit somewhere in the installation it hung up with a message “Waiting for DSMOS”.

I tried many times and even tried loading different kernels. Can anybody help me with this? I would really appreciate it.

  3. hi,follow your instruction,screen display:

is it the problem of cd-rom or disk or setup?

  4. Hi,

I’ve tried to install SL on a Compaq cq62-225nr

    Its an AMD Athlon p320,

I get as far as “install success”, and try to reboot, then I get a loud screeching sound, and nothing happens?

Any idea on how to fix this.

The other time i get “still waiting for root device”

    Any help will be appreciated,

  5. Hello,

What are other conditions that could cause the installation to hang besides lack of activity? I moved my mouse almost non-stop during the install and it keeps hanging at the same spot everytime I try to install it. I also removed the printer drivers and extra languages in the “Customize” menu.

    Thanks in advance.

  6. Dear Prasy, installation was smooth and everything was working fine until when I boot into the system and it shutsdown my machine directly at the grey apple logo part, what is the exact problem? Thanks

  7. I had successful with modbin kernel using rd(o,o)/Extra/modbin_kernel but I have a question ¿What I need to do to boot from my hard drive? Is it possible?

    Thanks for your advice

  8. Hello everyone, I am having a big… no… ENORMOUS problem here: I am trying to install Mac OS X 10.6.3 on a newly purchased 2TB RAID0 array. The problem is, quite frankly, the fact that this f&(%ing operating system, apparently, has a big problem with SATA drives being set to the RAID mode, and therefore it blocks when I try to start the setup if they are set to this mode. Of course, if I set the SATA mode to AHCI, I can enter the installation and it all works wonderfully, but I can’t install the os on my RAID array anymore.
So, as you probably realized, my question is:(and I am writing it in caps because I am desperate)

Thank you a lot for your time taken to read this. I am truly desperate as I really want to install Mac on that RAID and I’ve tried googeing it and asking on some forums but I had no success. Have a cold glass of beer on me if you can help me solve this problem.

    Happy Holidays everyone!!

  9. hw007 :
Oh, forgot to mention, I have managed to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop if that helps

What Kernel did you load? How did you load it?

  10. I’m using laptop with internal dvd drive. It will not eject the cd to insert osx dvd
Any help to work past this would be appreciated.

  11. Hey just want to say great bootloader, everything for me works great out of the box…my only concern is that i cant seem to edit the host file, it keeps on taking me to the postboot folder on the desktop of mac os x….is there some of getting around that or just removing for good?

And the next thing is my dvd rom is not working when im inside mac os x…any suggestions?

    Thanks again

  12. Installed OS X 10.6.3 on HP DV6 2nd Partition (1st partition = win 7)

Installed myHack 1.1.4 using required kexts for my system.

Reboot without nawcoms boot cd hangs at grey apple logo.

Loads fine with boot cd with WIN 7/OSX option.

Have tried boot: -v -x test nothing seems to be wrong.

Please can you suggest something else.

  13. I need help with this, as I’m using acer aspire x1200 desktop… the efi boot disc (efi and legacy efi) both work up until I go to install the mac osx snow leopard 6.6 disc (I purchased at a Mac Store)…. Disc spins up but nothing but black after that.. Disc seems to spin for a lil bit, and then nothing… hangs… no installation!

Is there a special way I’m supposed to set up my hard drive (internal) such as partitions/ formatting, etc????

Please give me as detailed of a walkthrough as possible.. I really want to run this on my pc…
and possibly have the option to dual-boot (choose between booting: Windows 7 and OS X Snow Leopard).

    Thank YOu…

  14. Ok, so I used Naawcom’s bootcd… and it now says:

    “Still waiting for root device”

What does this mean? any workaround?

-Only Problem is, When OS X goes to sleep, I cannot wake it (dim pink screen, no activity) & When I Force-Power off (hold power button down) it shuts down, and when I power it up, I get balls-fast and loud fan noise… no boot. If I unplug the power cable to my pc and reboot, it works perfect.. boots right into OS X… and runs perfectly… I have sound and everything…. Can Someone help me with the sleep issue?

(I’m Running Snow Leopard 10.6 – Actual Retail Disc from Mac Store / I installed SL using Nawcom’s Boot Disc)
    Snow Leopard 10.6
Acer Aspire X1200 Desktop PC (AMD dual core)

  16. I am having the same problem as rayborn is. Everything installs proper, myhack is installed. Then i try to reboot and the boot gets hung up on the grey apple. then a little circle with a line through it comes up.
Do i need to install a new kext or something?
I am doing a fresh install without any language packages and trying it again. hopefully it will work out the bugs.

  17. Problem: on my AMD PC based on Asus M2N68-VM (Nvidia nForce 560/630a chipset) I can boot from nawcom ModCD and start retail Snow Leopard 10.6.3 DVD, but as I arrive to Os X installation GUI the mouse, either PS2 or USB, doesn’t work (keyboard is ok). On the motherboard there is only one PS2 port, so I have tried all combinations of mouse and keyboard, but the problem is still here. Ah, the mouse is working good under Windows. Any hint? Thanks in advance and sorry for my poor english,

  18. MAn, tried several times, but MYHACK 1.1.4 is not inside this boot CD. There is no post install folder inside this image.
