I’ve decided to go ahead with the Nightly Chameleon Builds , after taking into consideration of my readers input based on my previous blog post , The reason why I started doing Nightly Builds is based on my previous experience on PearPC. Back in the good ol’ PearPC days (yes , it was the only emulator out there that could run MacOS X in PC ,before the Intel transition) , I use to compile nightly builds and custom builds and put it up on my site. It did generate a lot of interest from people and not to mention rapid feedback from all folks to the development team. I decided to use the same thing with Chameleon. Anyhow , lets get into the content of this post
Oh one more thing , be sure to read the FAQ (after the jump) before embarking on the journey to download nightly build !
FAQ (after the jump)
What are Nightly Builds ?
Nightly builds are basically latest builds fresh from Chameleon repo (svn). Basically from time to time , developers do tend to add new functionalities to chameleon which could be beneficial to us. These changes are later collected to form the basis of a new Chameleon version. Nightly builds generally are unstable and not recommended for production use. However its good for testing purposes and/or to experience what latest Chameleon version has to offer.
Why Nightly Builds ?
As I’ve said earlier , its basically to help developers to gather feedback from users. Plus its easier for users to give feedback to developers. Plus on top of that I am sick of people including their own boot logo and other crap with Chameleon. This is just fresh , as in from the svn repo delivered to you with no added MSG or preservatives ! Yes , you get it as it is – no crap , no installers , no lame themes , etc
How long does it take for the nightly builds to be updated ?
I updated them at least once or twice a day unless I’m away from my computer for whatever reasons. Currently , its being compiled on my server and pushed to the server via FTP. This process is entirely automated via a bash script. I’ll run this script entirely in the server and it will be fully automated
What are included in Nightly Builds ?
Just the compile binaries + a changelog . You get the entire chameleon binaries that you get from the official site minus the documentation , the artwork and other stuff
There are soo many files in the folder , how do I know which is which ?
To make your life easier , all builds are assigned with revision number and build date when it was compiled. The file follows the following format
whereby header is either trunk or branches (i.e meklort’s) , revision is the svn revision and date is the date of which the files are compiled (+8 GMT)
So if you’re looking for a newer revision , try to look for a newer revision or newer build date
How do I install it ?
Currently , I am in the midst of writing a complete how-to with pictures and hopefully a video link soon on how to explain. But for now , I have nothing written (Thanks PolishOX) ,You may read a simple yet detailed guide here , alternatively check out the alternatives which I provide . I hope to get a working guide or video tutorial as soon as possible. If you want to help me , feel free to drop me an e-mail. I would appreciate it
If you are still unsure of how to install it , I would recommend you to read the following guides – How to Install Chameleon by iHackintosh , tonymacx86 – how to install chameleon from Terminal , Install Chameleon to EFI/GPT [Recommended for EFI users]
I dont trust you , how do I compile chameleon myself ?
Kindly refer here
Do I get support for nightly builds ?
No , you may not get support for this. However if you want to help developers by posting bug reports (useful ones and not ‘ZOMG , it does not work) , feel free to head here. Register account and file a bug report ! Please be sure to specify the build that you’re using (i.e 602 and the date it was compiled) . Lastly but not least , do not annoy them !
I want <insert developers name> branch to be built and added to the downloads , do something ?
Yes if there is enough demand , I’ll host the branches as well. The reason why I don’t do that is that its much more unstable. But suppose if a lot of people do request for it , I have no objections in hosting it !
