Install Snow Leopard on a PCS- The Easy Way

I’ve written my detailed guide and its now time for me to write a noob-friendly guide for the mass. The idea came when Conti ( a very talented guy came up with an installer). The idea behind creating an installer is to simplify things , again its not to assist newbies who don’t have a clue. Its for those who would like to save time. This guide is a complement to my other guide which I’ve written in the past.

Firstly , read my Installing Snow Leopard on a PC guide. Make sure you prepare your USB Stick by following my guide. You don’t have to install Chameleon nor follow any other steps. Just up to the part whereby you’ve copied the contents of your Snow Leopard DVD to your USB Stick. You could do this with a Real Mac or your hack. Its just that you’ll have to use a Mac. If you don’t have one – No problem , just head over to a Mac Centre/Apple Store ,  I’m not kidding. Just use the PC to copy contents . I’m not sure if they would allow you to insert SL Disc , but then do give it a shot

Next up fire up the installer (which you may download the latest and greatest version from Conti by clicking here) , and select your USB thumb drive or an external disk.

Screen shot 2009-09-26 at 2.39.06 PM

Select the right patches. For instance if your BIOS doesn’t support AHCI , do make sure you select AppleIntelPIIATA kext . Again you should leave the default options as it is. Once that is done , you should able to boot from your USB Stick

Screen shot 2009-09-26 at 2.49.29 PM

Once you’ve installed Snow Leopard , use your USB stick to boot to your local hard disk. Once you’ve managed to get it up , re-run the installer. This time , uncheck framebuffer disabler and select other kexts to get your system working. Therefore allowing you to boot your system !

If you’re having issues using automated/simplified method , then by all means – follow my guide and do it manually !

  1. Thanks. This helped me to get SL running on a ASRock 4Coredual-VSTA. Am limited to booting my SATA install drive from USB for now, but that’s due to AHCI limitations on the ASRock. Although maybe I’ll figure that out now too.

    Again, thx!

  2. I tried everything from this guide, and I’m able to boot the installation from the cd without any problems, but when it comes to choose disks, it only shows IDE or USB partitions…no SATA :(:(:(:(:(

My Board is Asus P5kc (ich9).

    Any Help?
    Thanks

  3. Hi,

You have some really great guides on this site. Thanks for your time.

I have Leo running well on my system.
I have tried this method and am having some issues. My system is not vanilla compatible so Im choosing the coco kernel (I tried without it and it would just restart before it got to the installer.)
When I have the coco kernel I get the following panic information:
    http://tinypic.com/r/2r4izkg/4
Do you have any suggestions for me? sorry, I’m a bit stuck as I have tried loads of different options and no luck.

    Thanks

  5. Hey mate :

Is it possible to Dual-Boot with myHack Windows 7 and SL ?

Be it installed on same drive different partition ?

And which OS to install first SL or Win 7 ?

  6. Hey, this is a great guide, I’m getting ready to buy the components I’m going to use in my build, but I just have a couple questions before I fully commit to a specific hardware setup.

What sort of limitations are present when you use the chocolate kernel to run SL on a P55 chipset?

And would it be easier to also have W7 if I installed it on a separate drive or on the same drive in a different partition?

  7. Well , Devon

It would be easier if you install W7 on a dedicated drive. Currently , you can have full vanilla support for Core i5 with OSX 10.6.2 😛

  8. Hey, thanks for your work and support!

I tried mostly all of your Guides and at least, this one worked for me and my Dell Vostro 400, (Core2Quad Q6600,ICH9 SATA, GeForce 8600 GTS) booting up the Setup. Now I´m Stuck by having no HDD´s showed up.

So can You tell me where I have to add the additional kext files to show up my HDD´s? Is it the Extra/Extensions folder on my USB Stick?

And do I have just to copy the files to the folder or is there other stuff to do to integrate those files so that Setup uses them?

Do You know a Site to find the right kext for my motherboard?

Thank´s for Your help, I´m a newbie to this scene, hoping to get this worked!

  9. Solved the problem. Reason: My Mainboard does´nt support AHCI… Used the AppleIntelPIIATA kext. Now SL Setup finds one of my two HDD´s, don´t ask me why… And it won´t make a partition or delete an old one…

    Any Ideas?

  10. Thanks Pradeesh

Although I am concerned if the ability to update to 10.6.2 exists, because as far as I know, I would have to install 10.6 (which doesn’t have full support for P55, from what I know), then use software update to get 10.6.2. Is this possible?

Also, you refer to it as Core i5, but I assume means the P55 chipset, whether it has an i5 or an i7 installed in it. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it doesn’t make any difference which processor I use with the P55 chipset from the kernels point of view

  11. Hey mate, thanks for all your hard work, I’ve sent a little donation your way 🙂

My problem is that I get to the gray screen with the spinning gear, and the installation never proceeds past that. I have an i7 920 on a X58M mobo, and nothing I try seems to let me get past that screen. Any insight you could provide would be useful.

    Cheers!

  12. Hi!
It’s a great and helpful site, thank you!

My problem is grey screen during install, after all text messages gone. And nothing happens.
It’s my videocard? I’m using IntelGMA950 in Intel 945GM chipset.

    Thank you
    (sorry for my bad english)

  13. Hey, Thanks for great tutorial…

When i boot from usb , i get this problem

‘EHCI Controller unable to take control from BIOS’
    ‘unable to obtain ownership’
    and then whole thing stops..

Please help to get out of this ,,Thanks

  14. Hmmm…I’ve posted in another tutorial already, to be more specific in the one how to install a virtual SL running within Vmware, which I did flawlessly. I managed to create a bootable USB stick in it, then installed Conti’s latest installer 1.0RC4 and after playing with options in BIOS I managed to get to the screen where it asks for a wireless mouse (I guess so ’cause a mouse with batteries to be inserted is displayed:)…before I get the mouse can anyone confirm for me, I’m on a good way to install SL successfully?!
I’m still an amateur in this. Honestly I’d prefer the easy method and if so choose the recommended one as a last instance.
Thanks for any answers in advance.

  15. Hello! I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and I wonderd if it is possible to doal-boot with SL? If it is, what OS is best to install first?

  16. Well, well…finally I’ve managed to install that tricky sneaky Snow Leopard on my Sony Vaio Z…however, many things just don’t simply work…I’m not sure if it is that much worth to have it installed this way. I’ll be playing with it and I’ll see how it goes. Thanks for Conti’s great MyHack iSuck:) and also many thanks to Pradeesh, who really knows the crack.
    Cheers lads!

  17. I`m trying to run on a laptop (Samsung Q35 with Intel 945) and with IPC 10.58 went all well. I did everything with your guide but after try to install via usb the monitor will be grey and nothing happens. What can I do (please, I`m newbee *smile*)? Thanks for your help with the exactly right steps.

  18. Poor me!
My HP G50 118nr (Petium dual core 3200 2.0) can’t boot with any cd in pack 1.08
    Normal: Error
    Legacy: Linux image error :((
And as I known, there isn’t any driver for Intel 4500MHD >.<
    Can you help me??

  19. I am not sure about HP

@pio – thanks and @Sumi – you can’t use that , its a recovery disk it will fail all checks and it will instantly reboot.

@Esteban , i have not even begged for donations in empire efi nor put pls donate me or what-so-ever in the project. But I recommend folks to spend $30 for genuine OSX !

  20. Pradeesh:

I read what you said to Rizwan about the USB controller fix. I too have the same error message and did what you said but it still hangs there. My hardware is:

Intel MB DP43TF, nVidia 8800GTS, Intel Core 2 duo 3.x, 4 gigs Crucial Ram

If you have any other suggestion I would appreciate them. I have that latest BIOS from Intel installed.

    Regards,

    Dan

MBR is possible, just apply the OSInstall MBR MOD (see http://osx86.sojugarden.com/downloads/ ) on your USB Stick

    Another question:
I can install Snow Leopard properly, boot it with the USB stick, install myhackinstaller on the HDD, install all necessary kexts and update it.
But when i try to boot the system without the USB Stick, Chameleon refuses to start. My laptop just shows a black screen with a small white underscore. Chameleon won’t start, i can only boot via the prepared USB Stick.
I installed on the 3rd partition of my internal HDD with MBR – partition scheme

    Any help is highly appreciated.

  23. hi there
    thanks for this guide…
unfortunately i get stuck (maybe at the end of) the grey myhack screen with the circle spinning.
it does that for a while, an then the circle just stops rotating.
when i wait for several minutes my monitor gets black and then tells me that it gets no data and switches to energysaving mode.
    any ideas?

  24. Hi there,
thanks a lot for your work, my installation works very fine; thats my configuration:
    Mainborad Asus P5Q pro turbo
    Graphic Nvidia 8600 GT
    8 GB Ram
    Sata HD Seagate 500 GB
Logitech Keyboard S510 (yes, the old) with SW from Logitech installed,
Terratec USB TV stick with eye TV.

As an additional i use to install kext for nvidia as well as the “orange..” for the HD.

The only thing is how can i get the 64bit running? Any idea?

  25. @digitalix – go to /Extra , find com.apple.boot.plist. Remove arch=i386 or replace it with arch=x86_64 and you’ll ahve 64-bit kernelspace. Anyway currently you’re running on 64-bit anyway. Check with activity monitor

  26. Dear Pradeesh,
your so right and i am so sorry about the naive question, as for cosmetic i’m looking to get the energy options working, sleep mode etc..

Thank you again and best regards

  27. i can’t install mac osx 10.6 in dell inspiron 1525
core 2 duo, 2gb ram, intel graphic x3100, mother board 965…..

  28. Hi, I have Mac OX 10.5.6 installed on an intel board. I graphics card is Ge force 7300 Gs (2GB) rof memory but I can not install final cutpro 7 because the system recognises the display card as having 64MB of memory. How can I solve this problem .

  29. I am confused by the last step. It says:

“Once you’ve installed Snow Leopard , use your USB stick to boot to your local hard disk. Once you’ve managed to get it up , re-run the installer. This time , uncheck framebuffer disabler and select other kexts to get your system working. Therefore allowing you to boot your system !”

Ok, I got it to boot. Do you mean to re-run the installer on the target hard drive?

  30. hey hi…i tried installing using hazard dvd…now this is what happens….everytime i finish the install process and restart…. i get a kernel panic….it mostly will show up after the uuid line….saying that 1024 cylinders and then gives a list of memory addresses….cant seem to get past that even with the legacy 10.6.2 kernel

i ma using a p4 1.9 ghz with 845g mb and 1.5gb ram…no graphics card and realtek 8139 ehternet……… leo 10.5.8 works like a charm….but it isnt snowing for me as yet!!

  31. Installing on Dell Inspiron 1525. It boots from the USB and the MY hack screen comes up, then it just goes black and the install screens never come up? Any help would be appreciated….

  32. I am having the same problem as jlshit. Running on evga x58 sli le. Ihack screen comes up and then screen goes blank. Not sure what to do.

  33. Hi pradesh, I’m pleased with this installation, it went smooth on HP Pavillion DV6000 series laptop. Now I’m able to run the Snow Leopard flawlessly.

I did a small broadcom WIFI fix, but I was not able to get Audio working. And battery monitor is not showing. When I tried doing ALC268 drive which was working fine with Leopard on Snow leopard, but I got kernal painic.
Tell me how to use the Kexts on snow leopard, when I tried I got errors.

  34. Pradeesh,

Thank you for your updates on “Kexts.com” for VoodooHDA. It is working nicely. Actually I tried just now, I wanted to update the blog, here I saw your message on VoodoooHDA.

Anyway it is working like a charm. Initially Battery meter not working, after installing the VoodooBattery, it’s working good.

BroadCom Wifi was not working initially, this issue was fixed by installing the small installer (“broadcomfix”) from “www.nawcom.com/osx86/downloads”.

Finally my system is up & running nicely.

I’m very thankful to you & OSX86 community.

  35. My laptop configuration is
    HP Pavillion DV6500 series.
Snow Leopard is working flawlessly ( Snow Leopard $25 DVD).

Intel Chipset Core 2 Duo T6550
    3 GB Ram
    Altec Lansing Speakers
    Webcam (Working out of box)
    Broadcom WIFI

  36. Pradeesh,
    One small issue in Sleep&Restart.

I installed the Sleepenabler.kext from “Kexts.com”. When I choose the Sleep option on screen, it will go to sleep but not restarting. I have to force shutdown by holding the powerbutton for 10 secs.

Is there any solution for this?

  37. Keyboard difficulties:

As a complete novice, this guide has been extremely helpful, although I have one (hopefully final) problem: Just purchased a Samsung N210 from Best Buy, which comes with Windows 7. After installing Snow Leopard I go to boot it up and it says something like “before beginning please connect a keyboard”… and that’s as far as I can get. I can use the keyboard up until this point (example, to open up the Setup window with F2). I also had to use a USB mouse as the trackpad wasn’t working. In fact, neither trackpad nor keyboard were working when trying to install Snow Leopard from the USB. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for everything.

  38. Eric,
If you have external keyboard & mouse (I used the Logitech keyboard), use it for first time. It should definitely to work. After logging to System, then install the PS/2 keyboard Kexts or following post installation guide lines.

I had the same issue, my laptop keyboard didn’t work first time, I installed the PS/2 Keyboard kexts after first login.

  39. Hey, I am quite new to mac’s and don’t know too much what i am doing, but here is my problem: I was able to prepare my jump drive just as the instructions say and used the myHack Installer Guide rev.6 . But when choose to boot it, it will just restart. what could potentially cause this?
    Thanks

  40. I managed to prepare the USB stick. OSX recognizes my USB as a valid SL install disc. I applied myHack. But when I try to boot from USB, I simple get a mssg stating operating system not found. Please help.
    Thanks!

  41. I managed to install sl with the USB stick. Now when I select the partition in which I installed SL it tells me to restart the computer with a big power icon in the background. Tried it many times. Please assist, so as to tackle this problem.
    Thanks!

  46. Sorry but how could i restore that dmg file if i dont have a mac?
I just downloaded mac.os.x.snow.leopard but its a dmg and i use windows 7. So anyone has an idea how could i write it on a usb?

  47. or you could install another os, maybe debian based, like ubuntu, ubuntu can open and burn .dmg files, not so sure could it be converted to .iso, you could also use TransMac, a software to open .dmg and other mac stuff, anway, install the transmac and run it, then press file>open image file>[your macintosh.dmg] and then press on your file and select expand, make the subtitle of the file to .iso and here u go, works for me…

  48. Hi all. I decided to buy a Window laptop which has i5 processor. 4gb of ram.

Can I know which laptop would you recommend to make my laptop hackintosh dual boot with window 7.

What else must I look out when buying the laptop ? specs i mean. The purpose for installing mac os because I need logic pro to work it. That’s all. Other than that. Nothing because I use windows for most of my everyday use . But you never know that I will get hook up using mac os.

    I have a few question.

Does the laptop keyboard works? Like apple + c to copy ? All those shortcut keys. How can I use that with the new laptop that I’m planning to buy? Meaning I’ve to do control + c on hackintosh?

I heard audio don’t work at times as well as wifi. Is there any fix? I have a copy of osx retail DVD. Fine with it?

And also what about the drivers? Where can I find for hackintosh? I’m confused but thanks again.

I must have a Sata drive too? Hope you guys can find me a good laptop. Ard 1k. I do audio and video editing . Thanks!

  49. I don’t know why i cann’t dual boot. Can you help me please?? 🙁 Excuse my bad english, i’m still learning:)

  54. I was able to boot Snow Leopard from external drive with this method for installation, but when the apple screen appears – a message saying “Restart your computer.Hold on Power button till it switches off and restart” appears. Hence I was not able to proceed with the installation. Can any one please help me, guiding further..?

    Thank You in advance..!

  55. Hi,

It’s been some time now since you originally posted both articles (this one and the longer one). When I follow your instructions, after creating the USB disk from my DVD, and running the myHack installer, I don’t see the screen where you can select drivers or ‘kexts’. It never appears. All I get to do is select my installation destination.

I also noticed the version of myHack that I have downloaded, is newer than the version you originally used. You are using myHack 1.0 RC3, I have myHack 1.1

I wonder, could you post a link to the version of myHack you used in your guide, as it doesn’t seem to be available for download from Conti’s website anymore.

    Your assistance is most appreciated.

    Thanks!

    EastonRoyce
