Troubleshooting your ADSL Connection : Part 2

This is the 2nd part of my troubleshooting series (That’s right folks – learn it from the expert). Anyway in this segment (uh well its like a TV show right ?) . Now let us take a look at the factors which plays a role in influencing our signal strength (for DSL). Psst if you haven’t read part 1 , I recommend you to do so now !

This is the official information that I got someone (lets just say an Insider from TM). Yes this is something which folks like you haven’t seen. These are the official figures , which TM should follow and its a good thing to know if your line is capable of handling connections at that speed (just click on it to enlarge)
If you take a look , the further you’re away from the DSLAM (the exchange or commonly refered as port by streamyx) , the less likely you’ll be getting full speed or at least the ability to enjoy higher speeds. If you take a look , for every KM , ~14 dB loss per km – which is pretty huge. That is why sometimes certain people get better speed and a stable connection then others  – its because of their line quality !
Anyway lets take a look at the factors and how to well overcome them :-
1. Distance – The further you’re away from the exchange the weaker the signal is. TM (or your local ISP) could have set the maximum distance , (lets call it d to be 5 Kilometers). This is because in order for them to provide a reliable service. Yes , they can go beyond that – this is where you’ll be facing funny isssues such as slow sync speed , frequent disconnection and so on
How to overcome this :- Move your house –  there is no other solution.
2. The length of the phone cable – It plays a significant role. The longer the phone cable from your DSL Modem to your splitter or phone jack – the weaker the signal gets. Sometimes the quality of the phone cable plays a significant role as well !
Solution : Try gettting a shorter phone cable and use a long LAN cable (RJ-45) instead of a long phone cable. If your PC is too far ,try considering getting a WiFi Router instead and a WiFi Card. These days you may get them at an unbeatable prices. On top of that , WiFi is bulit-in into all morden laptops , PDA phones ! – So if you would like to create your own hotspot at home , then you should get one !
3. Modem – Yes they do play a significant role. Its because of the chip that they use inside. Some DSLAMs (exchanges/port) prefer certain kind of modem. Don’t ask me why , it just works that way. Try getting recommended or certified modem (by your ISP). For instance here is the list of TM recommended/verified modems/routers
Solution :  Uh get a new one or borrow one from your friend to test it out. That is how basically it works . There is nothing much for me to add
Of course there other factors such as the age of your internal phone wiring and so on. I can get into the details but you’ll notice that there is a pattern. These 3 factors are very very important factors . So now you do have an idea how basically you could troubleshoot yourself before calling your ISP Tech Support. It saves your energy , your time and most importantly your money. Did I mention that it extends your lifespan too ? – Yep , you dont get worked up
Oh not to mention here is a tip provided by a reader of my blog :-

others:: try ADMIN and ADMIN or BLANK password….mainly for default linksys or D-Link or even the AZTECH modem.

So if you connect Router-Modem, then you have double sets of NAT routes, but you should be able to access the modem. – Azrin
