P1 WiMax Review – Part Two

This is my second segment/part of the review. In this segment , I would be focusing on Internet Applications. That means how sites such as YouTube , Forums , Blogs and things like that would load. In other words , how good P1 in terms of productivity web applications and Internet entertainment.
As I’ve mentioned earlier I’ll be splitting this mega review into segments and parts. If you have missed the first segment/part , click here  (Part 1 of the review) to read about it. I’ll be then creating an index (once the whole review is done) so that it would be easier for people to refer and jump into the section that they prefer. Do keep in mind that this is going to be a very long post as I’ll be basically talking and comparing stuff. Its not for the faint of heart !

Never Ever Hotlink Your Files and Images

Anyway , as most of you do know. I do have tons of friends and the other day HeHeHunter (People do know him as the guy who translated Xunlei to English and stripped the ads and made it spyware free)  , was ranting about how people stripped his work and then just directly hotlink (It means that directly linking images from one’s site without permission , which is bad as it drains your bandwidth and you take no credit for it) . He did ask me for help and we thought why don’t we together and work on a script which allows webmasters to protect their files and Images. This is a great way to conserve bandwidth.

Oh No !
Oh No ! - This what happens when someone hotlinks

Oh yeah to demonstrate this purpose , here is an original article found over at HeHeHunter’s blog . Now try to visit here (i’ve hotlinked the image directly from this site). If you still see the image hit Control + F5 or just hit refresh. Now you should see the effect of it. Anyway this is the script. Oh you should check out HeHeHunter’s blog as well. He has the whole story there and how he thought a person who hotlinked his images a lesson !
To prevent people from stealing your images and linking directly (and as well as your files) , you’ll have to edit your .htaaccess. Edit your .htacesss , usaully its hidden but you can browse it if you’re using a 3rd party FTP Client that allows you edit it

You may want to read his entry on this and his opinon as well . Seriously , when two minds are put together to work on any project , the result is well this. No wonder processors these days comes with 2 cores and more .

P1 WiMax Review – Part One

Ta Da – As I’ve promised you guys , I went to P1 Office Today @ Jln Templer (Oh yeah my dad drove me there as I don’t know the roads in PJ , plus it can be confusing at times) , I was greeted by Miss Naomi . She explained the whole free 6 months concept and stuff and the sign up was pretty fast and easy.
You’ll have to hit Read More as it contains lots of pictures and words. So if you’re intrested to learn more on P1 WiMax service , I recommend you to read more.
Basically to sum it up. I’ll be reviewing by “parts/segments”. Each segment focuses on certain aspect of the service. For instance , the first segment/part is all about setting it up and so on.  This way it would be easier for someone to read and understand how the service works. Here is my layout currently. I plan to do a couple of parts and as we do get any updates. I’ll be post them here

Tomato Firmware Updates !

Its been a while since I’ve talked on Tomato. Anyway , Victek is hanging out over at Lowyat message board. That seems to great , he gives us the updates whenever they are released and he does hangout there to help us sometimes. Its so great of you Victek.
Anyway , this is what has been updated in the last version

* Fixed remote logging didn’t work if ‘log internally’ was disabled.
* Updated – Dnsmasq 2.46, Dropbear 0.52 & Busybox 1.12.3.
* DDNS now works even if WAN is disabled as long as DDNS uses an external checker or a pre-defined IP (Basic:DDNS:IP Address).
* TCP Vegas (TCP congestion control) added (enable in QOS:Settings), thanks to Rodney H.
* SYN cookies setting in Advanced:Firewall.
* Status:Device List now shows OUI, Static IP, Add Wireless Filter links in a separate line.
* Removed ebtables patch which appears to have caused various problems.
* Create Backup setting & Backup Link URL in Admin:Bandwidth.

Pretty much some great stuff. Just posting the updates ! Thats about it. Later I might share a couple of tips and tricks on how to protect your WiFi and such !

P1 Free W1Max Trial – Here I come

Well , Its been a long time since I’ve checked my e-mail and guess what – I was selected for P1 W1Max Trial. This is great news , I can test drive their WiMax for 6 months and post a complete review (as just like I did with Maxis Wireless). I’ll be heading to their office tomorrow to collect my modem to test it out. I’ll be mainly doing comparison in several aspect , how it performs

OMG - Free 6 months Trial
OMG - Free 6 months Trial- Time for a test drive (Removed the person's last name and contact number to protect her privacy)

The good news is that there is an official P1 representative here in a message board. That’s something new for an ISP to do. So far I’ve never seen one that came out to answer users doubts and question. Keep up the good job P1 !. The rest of the ISP , Its a shame that none of your representative come out to give answers but rather just looking the reports. I do have a strong feeling  that Maxis and TM do check out the message board regularly from time to time. Anyway , let you guys know how it goes. If you’re interested to test out P1 W1MAX Trial , then check out this thread . If you have any questions , just ask in the thread itself. There is an official P1 resprentative there that can answer all your questions
I just love when there is an ISP that gets back to its user and hangs out at a place whereby users share their opinions. Kudos P1 ! I can’t wait to test drive your WIMAX service and to write a review. This is something good.
P.S – Of course the 20GB might not be nice for some of us , but if we take a look at the other way – the customer support seems to be pretty good !

RM 20 to watch a Hollywood film ? You gotta be kidding

That’s right folks. It seems that our local Malaysian Film Producers Association want us to pay more to watch Hollywood Films. Their reason is basically was to protect local film industry claiming that they were underperformed  and people didn’t want these films. You may want to read the full story here .
So whats my view you ask ? – Lets see , piracy would increase. Even if its approved , people would buy RM 5 DVD (that’s around USD$1 for a DVD) to watch at their homes instead of watching it at cinema.  So you’ll be losing audience , plus local movies aren’t so great. They used to be great in back then during the P.Ramlee era but now just take a look at it. Its the same ol’ story and certain movies are pretty much a replica of western movies but with local touches. So , doesn’t this move (if it gets approved by the cabinet) contradicts their stance on wiping piracy ? This is dumb

9932511990644302
RM 20 in price - That is madness. (Original Picture)

Now , the President of the association said that in Indonesia , there is such policy. But let me tell you this , Indonesia produces quality movies. Just ask about any one and most likely most of us would be watching Indonesia drama such as “Bawang merah and Bawang putih” rather then our local home-made drama. Why ? It is because it has a good storyline and it isn’t that crappy as our local dramas. Plus the actor and actresses are hot and good looking too. The main thing people are looking for is storyline. Plus I am not into a replica of movie of super action movies such as Cicakman (Yes I saw the first one but it seems to be a replica of Spider-man).
If our local flim industry wants to compete , they should come up with a good storyline that revolves a life of an average Malaysian. Just take a look around us , how many of us are suffering from the current economy crisis ? Inflation ? . Why don’t they come up with something like that rather then mumbling and ranting saying that local film industry can’t complete. Protecting them would only make things worst and not improvise things. I would only agree if they want to increase the price if there are many good films as we have seen in P.Ramlee era such as Bujang Lapok , Ali Baba & 40 penyamun. Unfortunately , P.Ramlee‘s Talent is lost and I am a big fan of his movies as I love the way how he acts . Now that’s something that you can’t find in today’s  talent
So what do you think about this move ? How does it place an effect on you ? Will you be going to buy pirated DVDs/download after this or will you opt to watch local films instead to kill your time ? Feel free to comment about it and do share your views as well

Its about time they did something – but is it too late ?

Finally , its about time that our local police did something right . They did call in the FBI to investigate on Nurin’s and Sharlinie’s case. As we do know that the late Nurin passed away and Sharlini has been abducted by the same person which they believed to have murdered Nurin.  , but till today – they haven’t found any solid evidence .After a very long time , our police sought the assistance of FBI to help to crack the case.
Well that is certainly some progress , I hope the Feds can help our local police team to crack the case and bring the molester to justice. Anyway , They should have sought for help a long time ago, and not now. So let us just pray that they do find Sharlinie alive.
For those of you who don’t know about the whole case , I would suggest you to read this and this .Lets just hope and keep our fingers crossed (or just pray :P) that they bring this so-called Kampung Baru molester to justice

BloggersUnited – A New Heaven For Bloggers ?

Well today while naning (aka giving karma points/thumbs up for people’s blog entry over at Nuffnang innit). I stumbled across this post by BLue8118 . Its about – BloggersUnited , a site whereby bloggers can share and post their stuff. Well , knowing me . I checked it out. As you all do know , once you’re into blogging you need to have people , get the connections and who knows – someday someone might help you.

bloggersunitedscreenbloggersunitedscreen
Bloggers United Front Page - (Oh yeah it has portion of my desktop as well - no biggie)

Anyway BloggersUnited is like a central place for bloggers (Its targerted for bloggers around the world – but primarlly there are lots of Malaysians and Singaporeans there) . It sort of like links up bloggers and groups them together. Bloggers can link their their blog and it automatically updates it . Plus they can add facebook and stuff like that. So far if you ask me honestly , I haven’t started venturing fully into BloggersUnited , but it seems that the authour of the site is doing a pretty good job on having a central place for bloggers to meet other bloggers
Nevertheless , if you’re into the blogging world you should give this a go. Heh , you may never know who you would meet one day ?. As for me , I’ll be testing this service out , looks promising and seems to be a nice place for bloggers to check it out , especially if you’re the type who is into food blogging , personal blogging and such.

BitComet 0.66 "Tweaked/Modified"

I was bored today. Thought of using my 1337 (well not really leet/elite) programming skills to use. It has been a long time since I’ve done programming. Anyway , this time it involves BitComet. The reason why I took it apart and tweaked it because I was inspired by this modded version which I found on Lowyat.net. Anyway the so-called tweaked version which I found didn’t fit in quite right .
Now , here is the problem – Our ISP in Malaysia (TMNet) throttles BitTorrent , well mainly I can’t get it to download by using Deluge , uTorrent and other BitTorrent clients (including the official version itself). I saw a great potential in this so-called modified version by an uncredited person. I am not sure who did it and what he did , but certainly he did edit a couple of things and changed icon. But I took a step further , by tweaking even furtherand by imposing a minimum 10 Kilobytes/sec upload rate. That’s right people , I am bit sick of people sucking it and then by seeding it at 1Kb/s. You’re forced to seed it at that speed. Its something good and no its not going to make your download that bad
Anyway , enough of talking. Let me present you with my modified version of BitComet 0.66. I don’t take any credits for doing it , but I take credits for modify some aspects of it. There are certain things which I’ve changed and which I felt was necessary to do so . These are :-

  1. Capped the upload limit to 10Kilobytes/sec. Thats it . I don’t care any of your excuses. Sharing is caring. Most people just download it and then forget it about it
  2. Removed other bloated stuff (This includes the so-called ‘hammering’ the Tracker to give more seeders and such which causes the tracker to blacklist your client)
  3. Fixed the lagging issue people complained with this version claiming to causes hangs and stuff like that. Shouldn’t be an issue anymore

Oh here is a screenshot , as you see below the speeds aren’t that great. This is because of the current cable issue that we are facing right now. Once they have fixed the problem ,  I think it can go full blast.

Bit Comet 0.66
Bit Comet 0.66 - Ubuntu isos are downloading in the background and notice the very low CPU usage :P. Unlike the so-called old moded version it doesn't consume that much of CPU !

Anyway here are the download link(s) :-
Link 1 (Rapidshare)
I’ll mirror to my web site later (my other site) as vlexo doesn’t allow me to host rar files and such :p. For transparency sake , I’ve included the original untouched version of BitComet  (if you’re soo paranoid). You could do a hash check or compare its MD5 or whatever that pleases you. I’ll mirror to other sites once the links are back up and kickin’ or whenever there is demand
That’s all now folks. Feel free to leave a comment 😛
