BenQ EW2440L Review – Part 1 (Taking a Closer Look)

The new BenQ EW2440L is out in Malaysia. It is monitor targeted is not targeted for photographers , hard-core gamers , or some photoshop expert , but instead it is targeted for mass users who uses their monitor almost everyday , that includes people who are in offices or even for students. The interesting thing is that unlike other monitors out there in the market , BenQ goes into the mantra of ‘‘Eye-care’ initiative.

As usual like any of my reviews I have done in the past , I’ll be breaking down into several sections , so that my readers and future buyers would have all the information they need before purchasing the monitor and if is actually bang for your buck 🙂

Introduction

The BenQ EW2440L is what BenQ calls the monitor which is good for your eyes. Basically it is a 24″ monitor with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 resolution and 60Hz refresh rate.It has a brightness of 250 cd/m2 (which is typical of monitor of these sizes). It uses a VA panel instead of the TN panel (I’ll go more in-depth of IPS vs TN vs VA panel after this). Also it comes with a built-in speaker , 2 HDMI Input with MHL support , D-Sub (aka VGA Input) (which allows you to connect your mobile phone and use the monitor as a second display). But what puzzles me is that why they are still including D-Sub aka VGA Input.

The BenQ monitor comes with 2 HDMI Input , 1 Analog Input (VGA) , 1 Audio Output (3.5mm) and 2 speakers

I was a bit disappointed that they did not include DVI Input , because PC Monitor and HDMI does not go well – as when you plug in HDMI cable to your graphics card ,it assumes you are connecting to a HDTV. However you can easily correct this in many OS by manually adjusting the settings

By default , most graphics cards and OS assumes that you are connecting to a HDTV. Turns on Overscan and changes colour scheme to match of HDTV. This can be easily adjusted

Since the monitor has 2 HDMI Inputs (and a VGA Input) it also makes it a great way for you to play console games on a PC Monitor and easily switch to your PC when you need it.

You can read the full technicial specification of the monitor by clicking here . Oh one thing to note is that this monitor does not support VESA mounting which means you can’t mount it on your wall

Also I love the thin bezels which means you can focus on the screen more instead of the surroundings !

Comparison Between Panel Technologies

BneQ EW2440L uses a VA panel and there are various different type of panels , such as IPS and TN. I’ll be giving you a simple explanation on the various kind of panels out there

Twisted Nematic (TN) Panel – Basically this sort of panel is found on cheaper TV sets , monitors. It has the narrowest viewing angle , old laptops do have this issue , whereby the colours are washed out when you change your viewing angle. To know if it is a TN panel , just simply try viewing the screen at different angle.

In-Plane Switching(IPS) Panel – Creme De La Creme. Used by A/V enthusiasts , photography peple or just anyone that wants to see the real colour in colour (does that even make sense). It gives a wider viewing angle with minimum colour shift. In other words – they cost a lot. You’ll see higher end monitors such as the ones from BenQ Gaming Series are using IPS panel

Vertial Alignment (VA) – This is the exact panel which this monitor uses. Basically VA panel sits in-between TN Panel and IPS Panel. Basically you sort of get the awesome stuff which IPS has to offer and at the same time it wouldn’t cause consumers to burn a hole in our pockets. This is the perfect balances. There are slight drawbacks such as the screens not having deeper black and you may still observe colour shifts like TN Panel but it is not very obvious

Unboxing/Installing/What’s Inside The Box

What a huge box !
What a huge box !  (and a blurry photo)

Basically you’ll be getting the following things in the box :-

  • The Monitor itself (aka the big screen)
  • The Fixed Stand
  • Power Cable and an Adapter
  • VGA Cable
  • HDMI Cable to miniUSB (this is meant to be used for your android phone)
  • Warranty , Manual Book and an Installation CD

Installing the monitor was pretty straight forward. The instructions was clear and straight to the point. You would need a screwdriver to tighten the stand with the screen.

Simple and straight forward instructions - reminds me of IKEA instructions manual

Once the fixing is all done , voila the desktop. Give me some time to explore the monitor and later we would be taking a closer look at the features !
