Printers are essential for two things – printing reports and printing notes. It becomes an essential tool for every student who is currently in college or university. It is because more and more of our lecture material , tutorial questions are being posted online. Not to mention that printing them in your college/university could be a hassle – especially when everyone is using the library printer for instance – you will see people printing their assignments at the 11th hour or simply printing the entire stack of lecture notes , tutorial questions for the semester and not to mention that at times , the printer could broke down and most importantly – printing in university could be expensive
Now you may say that if there is only a way I could get the awesomeness of university printer for my personal use and which does not cost a bomb. Thankfully your prayers have been answered – SAMSUNG ML-2160 series printer. A printer that is easy on the wallet and the environment too – and not to mention that it’s a laser printer (similar to the ones used in your university for printing documents)

I would like to highlight few aspects of these printers. They all come with a toner pre-installed (that allows you to print up to 700 pages) and the printer prints 20 pages per minute . The cost is RM 299 and RM 349 (for the wireless model) respectively . Now if you compare it with other laser printer models which I’ve listed below
You’ll certainty notice that SAMSUNG M-2160 is very well priced compared to other printers such such as HP Mono LaserJet P1102 and Canon-LBP 6000 which does 18 and 14 pages per minute. On top of that the additional features such as Easy Eco Driver which helps not only the environment , but also results in efficient use of the toner .Clearly for its price , it does give you a pretty good performance overall compared to other printers in the market with similar price range.
Specifications & Comparison with other Laser Printers
Now a lot of you may have already own a printer – chances are it is an Inkjet printer. Inkjet printers are cheap and these days it is common to see that Inkjet printers are bundled together with scanners (thus making it as All-In-One device). Inkjet excels because its an all-rounder – you could print in colour , you could print documents. However there are few disadvantages to Inkjet printers. Firstly , Inkjet printers take a longer time to print documents as opposed to laser printers (lower-end inkjet printers could do around 12 pages per minute). Plus the costs of cartridges can be overwhelming especially if you print documents often.
Now on the other hand laser printers do have faster print times compared to standard Inkjet printers and ongoing costs of laser is printer is generally cheaper. On top of that laser printers do have their own memory and processor compared to Inkjet printer. The reason being laser printers need to hold an entire image of each page in memory before printing. This is because once it feeds in a sheet, it is committed to sending that paper through at a set speed (if it stopped to wait for data, the temperature of the toner unit would burn the page) as opposed to Inkjet whereby Inkjet printers whereby data is fed line by line from the computer to the printer.
Of course each of the ink technology do have their pros and cons. However for printing black and white pages , laser printer still do have an upper hand compared to Inkjet printers because of the costs in the long run
Initial Impression
Lets take a look what do you get inside the box. Basically you get the printer , USB cable and power adapter , manual and installation disc.
The complete package – (Printer , USB Cables , Power Cable (Malaysia) , Power Cable (USA) , Installation CD) – Mac Mini is not included
Upon a closer look of the toner , you notice that there is warning label that it can get very hot. It pretty much explains the point above which I’ve stated on Laser Printers. That’s why you need to have a memory and a processor for a laser printer compared to Inkjet printer
Yikes – Don't Touch Em . This sums up the reason why you need a processor and memory for a laser printer such as SAMSUNG ML-2160
The printer itself is small and it just fits about anywhere. For comparison purposes I am comparing it to my current Canon MP500 All In One Printer. Just take a look at the size of this SAMSUNG printer. Its small and it fits just about anywhere as opposed to my current printer
Just compare these two printers – The MP500 is pretty huge printer compared to SAMSUNG ML-2160. Think of the SAMSUNG ML-210 as a Mini or SMART for 2.
Another shot would pretty much explain this. The printer only takes up 1/4th of my previous printer space which is neat for students who are renting a place or with limited space and those who don’t have any place the printer. I can safely say that you can place the printer , your notebook and still have a place to study
A closer look…
I have created a video which pretty much gives you an overall picture of this printer
