Nawcom’s BootCD – The sucessor to EmpireEFI

As we know , EmpireEFI , tonyx86 boot cd and other boot cd variants has helped a lot of us to get retail OSX installation in our beloved Dell Computers (and clones alike). What nawcom has done with his boot cd is that he has taken entirely it into next level. His bitchblog may seem a bit technical. So I am here to translate that to plain english on simply what it means. It simply means that now you can install OSX alongside with Windows on a MBR partition without the need of formatting the entire drive as GPT and using complicated procedures to dual boot. Plus on top of that , nawcom has added support for a variety of graphics card  (well almost all which Chameleon native Graphics Injector supports) as opposed to my EmpireEFI. It will automatically detect your hardware through I/O Registry and post-instructions will be posted over at Desktop , thus making it a lot easier for you to get to know about your hardware and to determine if its supported. For your information , I’ll be working with nawcom to come up with an awesome boot CD which shall supersede EmpireEFI.

UPDATE #1 – Updated version can be obtained from here (changelog + details) Nawcom has included two kernels in his BootCD , a modbin patched kernel and the legacy kernel (aka chocolate kernel which supports a lot of processors from AMD up to latest Intel series) . Anyway enough of the long and lengthy explanation , lets get to business shall we Installation instructions & Download Instructions

PS  – Its almost  the same as EmpireEFI. All you would have to do is :-

Requirements : MacOS X 10.6.x installation disc (OSX 10.6.3/OSX 10.6.0 discs would work fine , however it will not work with recovery discs of Macs of any kind) , a CD-Burner , A compatible PC If you face any problems , I’ve written a mini troubleshooting guide as well (just scroll down) 1. Burn the ISO (which you could download it from here (OLD version) or here (UPDATED VERSION/RECOMMENDED) , alternatively mirrors/latest version can be obtained from nawcom directly

Kindly burn it at the slowest speed using Nero, Windows default ISO burning tool , OSX or whatever your favorite burning software is. 2.. Make sure you’ve set your BIOS to boot from CD. Simply insert the ISO which we have burnt (for connivence sake , we will be calling it the swap disk from now onwards) and be sure to boot from the swap disk.

3. If everything goes okay , you’ll be presented with a graphical boot loader. Please be sure to read what is stated in the screen. Yes , take your time and read first

Afterwards , simply eject the disc. Insert your genuine OSX installation disc and hit F5. If everything goes okay , you should see OSX installation disc in the menu. Select that and keep your fingers crossed. If everything goes well , you should be in installation menu. Install as usual , but be sure to remove unwanted stuff such as printer drivers , additional languages (if you dont use them) as it would increase the installation time and would probably cause the installation to hang. TIP/NOTE– Another tip is during installation , please be sure to move your mouse to provide some activity. There have been cases whereby installation would just lock up for some reason due to no activity.

4. If everything went well , simply reboot with the swap disc and select your newly installed OSX partition.  After which you’ve booted to desktop , be sure to use the myHack 1.1.4 package on the boot CD, located in the Post Install pkgs folder on the boot CD. Read the Important Information Dialog!! Don’t forget to select Customize to install the support your hardware needs! – Reboot and pray that it works

Troubleshooting Guide

If you’re getting a Black Screen/Black screen with a curosr , then simply use the following command GraphicsEnabler=Yes After swapping the CD with the DVD and before you boot up the OS X Install DVD. Basically its at the time whereby OSX Installation DVD shows up , simply type GraphicsEnabler=Yes (alternatively you may hit tab and type it in the command prompt) If you have any questions , doubts , simply post it here and I’ll try my best to get in touch with you to resolve your issue

  1. I have a Dell SXPS 1645 I’ve been toying with the last couple days. Using this swap disc with the retail install for 10.6.3 leads to a black screen even with GraphicsEnabler=Yes.

  2. Asus P7P55LE
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz
    Kingston 4,00 GB 1333mhz
ATI Radeon HD 5770 (Asus version)
    Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB
    Windows 7 x64

these are my specs, but with a lot of cd’s it doesn’t work, iboot, nawcoms cd’s, most of the empire efi versions and that new russion cd. that results in an instant reboot when pressing on the os x installation disc.

there is only one version i can boot with, but also not perfectly and that’s legacy empire efi 1.095 so could you use l don’t know mayne the kernel of this. version

Well unfortunately RadeonHD Mobility isn’t supported in OS X, but if you still want to install OS X regardless of the lack of video, I would try booting with the boot flag GraphicsEnabler=No.

Really all I want is to replicate the success that Eido from this thread: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=224515 has had with the same machine.

  5. Dell XPS 435MT
    Intel Core i7 920
    4GB RAM
    ATI Radeon 4850

I think I may have a variant of the “black screen” problem.

Except I don’t get a black screen on its own – I get a black screen with white “smudges”, it looks almost like the old Space Invaders game. But it’s totally garbled and illegible.

When I move the mouse the white pixelated bits move too, and when I press spacebar at this point the OSX DVD spins up and starts doing stuff, which tells me it is accepting input.

I have tried GraphicsEnabler=Yes and GraphicsEnabler=No. I have tried the modbin kernel.

    Help please?

  6. Bob you will have to use ATI exotic package for 4850 check nets.org.
    try booting using -x
if that fails try a spare gfx card NVIDIA is best .

  7. Iam getting still waiting for root device, but i can fix it by using a ide (not sata drive), but when I get to disk util no hard drive shows up which is a sata drive, what up with that?

  8. Update; It saw the hd but I had to put it in a usb dock, and got it up to the creating account…. it took forever, so I rebooted, then it finally boot to the login, so I did, installed my custom package of my hack, clicked restart it didnt (not sure it that means anything) so I restarted from the apple menu…, but when it boots up from the hard drive I get GRUB loading stage 1.5.
    GRUB loading please wait…
    Error 17

AND it I try boot to the osx installed hd from the swap cd…without the IDE drive I get the still waiting for root device, issues?

Please help! BTW Thanks you guys for the work & software!!

  13. Will this work with the Intel gma4500 graphics card? All I want is native resolution, I know I won’t get qe/ci.

  14. Hi master, thnx for the non-technical guide, i was really bitched on the other blog :P, wonderful piece of software though :).

I am having a slight problem here, i got a Acer Aspire M3802 ( http://goo.gl/ANzq for specs ), my current disk state is a backup partition from acer (15gb), the windows 7 system partition (100 megs), and a 50 gig windows 7 partition, the rest is free and ready for OS X, though after i booted nawcoms boot cd, i got a “still waiting for root device” message. i also ran the boot cd option from the boot menu itself and the modbin too, if they are any sort of diagnostic features then please have a look in the links below, hope they will assist you on helping me.

this is my very first time that i am trying this, i have no experience at all on the advanced terminal level of unix systems so please be patient to me, i also have googled for the problem, even though it seems easy to resolve for people, i personally dont know where to start.

  16. I try to boot up but after I select the Leopard DVD in Chameleon it lists a bunch of stuff its loading and then says “Press any key to continue”. Pressing a key results in the system rebooting and then getting nowhere.

  17. CPU: Intel Core i3 2.2ghx
    RAM: 2gb
    Nvidia 310M graphics

    Lenovo Ideapad Z460

Just tried this method and finally got a boot cd to recognise my OSX install USB stick.

However, I get to the install part and choose a partition yet it says I must have a GUID partition. I thought that this new Nawcom boot cd could install to a MBR partition?

    Can anyone help? Thanks

  18. So far i have managed to go through a loads of problems, though my GraphicCard is holding the whole system to work. I just cant make my system boot normaly without -x. any chance i can make Leo like my Ati Radeon 4300?

  19. Motherboard: MSI K9A2 Platinum
    CPU: AMD Phenom Quad Core
    Video: NVidia 8800

I am soooo close, but I currently have no display. After trying and retrying hundreds of times to get the 10.6.3 installation to run all the way through without dying, I actually was able to boot successfully into OSX through the bootloader, and lo and behold there was video at full resolution and sound with that nifty OSX video playing. It totally blew my mind, and I was entering in all my credentials for my mobile me account, and finally got to the part where you enter in the user account info and choose a password. Hit continue, and it sat there and spun for like 10 minutes saying it was talking to Apple. Tried to hit “go back” but there was no response, so I did a hard reset. Now the display refuses to enable. I see it normally get to “DSMOS has arrived”, and then no more text output displays, but I know it must be booted because I can press ctrl-delete and I hear sound! How can I get this working again??

  20. I am seeing the same thing as Jeff. The only way I could get this to install however was to restore the 10.6.3 image to a partition on my drive, then install from the partition.

Any ideas to stop the rebooting?

  21. Hi all
Worked with nawcom , well there is this new bootCD v0.3 , which is an more up to date version of the original boot disc. I recommend you to give it a shot , to see if it works or not

Please post if something isn’t working as we are trying our best to deliver a boot loader which does all – who knows it might do laundry one day as well !

  22. Hello!

I used old nawcom bootcd, and i restored SL DVD retail into a usb disk. I chose the usb disk in nawcom bootcd.

The problem is the installer is very slow, the mouse does not freeze. but it reacts very slowly, so I cant install anything.

    config:
    core i7 860 2800 MHz
    packard bell M5740
may I have some help please?

  23. Hello!

I’m a real starter at this so bear with me here please. I am trying to install on a Asus P5QL Pro mobo but no succes yet. Tried new navcom3 cd and iBoot 2.5, both with no result. Navcom ends with ACPI error at the boot of Snow Leopard DVD:
ACPI_SMS_PlatformPlugin:: start – waitFor Service (resourceMatching(AppleIntelCPUPowerManagment) timed out. In the beginning of that process it also complains about ACPI:
    ACPI table not found: DSDT.aml

Seems there is a problem with ACPI but I can’t adjust much in bios here, it’s at S3 now.

Anyone any succes with a mobo like mine?

    Thanks,

    Bas

  24. G’day, I can’t thank you enough for this CD. It’s helped me immensely. I’m installing to

So far I have OSX 10.6.3 booting from your ModCD v0.3. No hickups so far. But #4 of your guide indicates there should be a myHack 1.1.4 package on the boot CD, in a post installs pkgs folder… I can’t find any such folder on the disk. Was this omit from the last version? And where can I find your post installs folder? I can always grab it separately and run it.

Can anybody help point me in the right direction?

    Thanks,
    Aes

  25. i have an Acer 4740G laptop:

    core i3 330m.
    nvidia geforce 310m.
    intel chipset.
    2gb ram.
    atheros WLAN.

I successfully installed it in my system, but for me to be able to boot the installation drive, I first need to type ‘busratio=16’ , do I really need to type the busratio everytime I boot mac? it’s a pain in the A**

another problems are: keyboard is not recognized and cursor is not moving (mouse problem)

    Thank you and more power!

  27. Hi !

    My PC:
    Core 2 Quad Q9450
    4Gb RAM
    ATI 4770

    Everything works well 🙂
I have installed 10.6 is it possible to use the update package 10.6.4 ? I would like to install iLife 11 which requires this combo update package.

    Thanks in advance 🙂

  28. Last night I tried to use the Nawcom Mod CD. The machine I using is built on a DFI Lanparty DK P-35 Dark series board. The cpu is a Intel Dual Core E6600. I made the changes for Sata Mode AHCI inside the bios and enabled HPET Mode and 64bit support are enabled. I am using a Nvidia Graphics card.

The system boots and gets to the splash screen just fine. When I swap disks for the Snow Leopard Retail OSX disk and press F5 once or twice nothing happens.

Any help and/or ideas would be appreciated. I am using a PS2 plug in type Keyboard for the install. I will try a USB keyboard but I do not think it will make a difference but we will see. I also have tried the Boot.ini program that does load the screen but after it loads and I swap disks it spins the OSX disk and then is stops after a few mins and puts up a gray screen with white writing telling me that I need to power off my machine. It never gets to the installer of OSX.

You can email me direct @ [email protected]

  29. Update: So far success!

I started to do more reading in the forums and did thinking. I found out, or think I did, that OSX Snow leopard does not support IDE at all. Since It’s been a year or two(possibly) more since I built this system, I did not remember if I had a Sata based hard drive mounted in the system or not. I was pretty sure the DVD/CD writer was IDE but I was not sure that was the problem. Sure enough when I opened the case the Western Digital Raptor I found that can be hooked up IDE or Sata was hooked up as Sata but the DVD Drive was IDE.

So I went to Best Buy and purchased an LG DVD Writer and came home and installed it quickly. Then I popped in the Nawcom Mod CD and waited. Up came the splash screen so I opened the DVD, took out the boot disk and swapped in the OSX Snow Leopard Disk. I hit F5 twice and the DVD drive spun wrote a couple of lines and then stopped. Then I clicked on enter and the Mac OSX install icon disappeared and I followed the screen directions and continued on and got the language splash screen. That is where I am now. So I have to format my hard drive and complete the install. I will report back once I am done. I will be happy to provide a list of hardware I used for my DFI built.

    Thanks,
    Jason

  30. This thing doesnt work at all

    i tried on 5 computers

    asus 1201n ion based netbook
    asrok 330 ion based nettop

    a c2d e6750 on a gigabyte 3dsl mobo with 4 gb ran a sata2 1tb sansung drive and a ati hd5770 1gb

    a amd x2 4000+ on a pcchips a13n with a solo ide 160 gb seagate drive, 2 gb ddr2 mem, ati hd 3450 256

and a itel dual core e5500 on a asus p5n-e sli, sigle sata 320 gb maxxwel, 2 gb ddr2 800 mem and a nvidia gts 250 512mb vga

on all those computers i get the “still waiting for root device” with a retail snow leaopar 10.6.3 disk, a real one and not a backup one.

i tried to use legacy ide on all sata devices, tried to put them as master on first slot, tried to use ahci on all of them.

if it didnt work on 5 diferent specs means i wont be able to use it on anything i could buy, so ill have to get myself a mac mini =(

  31. by the way

ive managed to install it ona virtual machine using virtualbox

why the hell i cant install it on a real one?

  32. This is awesome!

Best ever. I’ve managed to install OS X on 3 cpu’s in the last 2 days.
Everyone that has problems with this; Just pay any attention to what the guides says and use the power of google.

A slow and friendly guide I can recommend is this one:

And again just read super THOROUGHLY and google.

  33. Did you find a solution to this? I am at the same place, everything installed just find, but no MyHack on the swap disk (maybe he’s referring to a different boot disk – confusingas in another post he says “no need for myhack, etc.).

Did you get an answer? “about this Mac” under Apple menu does not identify my cpu, just the speed. Thanks.

  34. Acer Aspire One 521, stock configuration – AMD Athlon II Neo 1.7GHz, 1GB RAM, 250GB HDD w/ restore partition and Win7 partition, ATI HD 4225 onboard. No luck in past with various iBoot or AMD distros like the Russian one, iAtkos 7, or whatever, Leopard or Snow Leopard. Tried *all* the EFI discs. With each one, some text comes up behind the “EFI EMPIRE” logo but then drive spins down and nothing else happens. With nawcomModCD, I can swap discs with retail 10.6.0 disc, it gets to the ‘starting Darwin, press any key’ part, but stops a few lines past… I don’t remember details but something about DHCI or something, first with 12.3 then 13.3. Also I get the earlier ACPI error message somebody else reported getting. Wishing I’d never gotten rid of my AOA150 w/ Leopard! Darn AMD netbook is a pain and a half to get OSX running on. But I do appreciate your work, honestly, this is pretty awesome stuff you’re doing and a lot of us would be hopeless otherwise.
