Earth Hour – My Thoughts

It seems that everyone is going crazy over this earth hour thingy whereby you’ll have to turn off your lights for an hour from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm . Nice concept but the execution seems to be bit of more into commercialism  – in sense of calling celebrities , sending out adverts to turn off the lights. My question is how in the world its going to reduce global warming in a day. People in Malaysia (and I believe around the world) are going crazy about this. I see this as a competition and for me , it seems that Malaysia wants to be in the list again proudly boasting that its possible to do so (just for a day). Thus reminding me of the space program which they did recently. I believe that such money could be put into better use – and most importantly for the welfare of the society especially in the rural area of Malaysia and such ! Don’t get me wrong , I am just expressing my thoughts on Earth Hour. I am not against it nor in favor of Earth Hour !

DiGi Broadband – My Analysis

There is a big rave about DiGi’s latest offering – DiGi Broadband. One thing caught me eye – “Broadband done right”. Okay , so I took at look at their packages and hows their offerings and such. For starters , their package seems to be too good to be true (It seems that DiGi has done some homework before rolling out their service). Kudos DiGi

P1 has enabled port forwarding !

This is great news for those who were ranting on how they could not host their own HTTP and mail server with their P1 WiMax Connection. Oh yeah , not to mention that it causes gamers (xbox 360/playstation 3) a havoc when they weren’t allowed to host game (because of the way of how P1 set it up)

Anyway , Miss Noami from P1 e-mailed us regarding this and she sent the username and password in order to configure port forwarding , DMZ and stuff like that. I’ll be doing a full story on this later but for now , this is the user name and password and the address

Maxis is that bad !

Hello to my dearest readers (if there are still reading this blog)

Anyway , I was browsing Jeff Ooi’s site (yes , I am sorta following his blog ) and one article stumbled me and took my breath away – Maxis’ Broadband rant. I do recommend you to read his whole article and his thoughts in his blog . What caught me is that it seems that Maxis has still not improved their service . That is not something new , I thought that things would have changed , unfortunately its not. Oh , not to mention that I fully agree with Jeff Ooi on this matter that Maxis should not be doing triple-play , just solely focus on one – Voice . That’s enough. This what happens when a teleco tries to be an ISP and fails at it.

Anyway ,what concerns me most is the Maxis Latest Promtoion. I pretty much laughed when I first heard they came up with the whole music concept thingy. Marketing strategy i guess in order to win over people. For instance , Maxis did offer couple of bloggers a test drive of their Dell laptop + Maxis Broadband bundle and blog wherever they can and write up their experience (in other words , just tell how “great” is their service).  Just click here (or do a google search on maxis broadband and blogger). You’ll notice some positive reviews like it , done by people in order to get freebies. Not only that , I was surprised when maxis was promoting their redesigned modem (their limited edition music designs)

broadband

Wow – That looks appealing to some but for geeks and those who are looking for real broadband – is it certainly not !

My question is , shouldn’t be maxis focusing on expanding their Broadband and 3G Services by buying more International links and improvising their 3G/HSPDA services nationwide instead of doing such thing. My plea to maxis is that if you’re reading this (chances are yes – I do know) – Just improvise your broadband service , blocking ports and not allowing folks to play online MMORPG (I am not talking about latency here) during normal hours and only allowing it to be played from 1 am to 6 am isn’t the right way to do it as it would discourage people from registring your broadband

I do hope that you take this note and improve on your service. I am happy with P1 , eventhough they might have hiccups here and there. I do get a prompt reply from P1 staff on the issues which I’ve discussed with them via e-mail . Currently , I’ve taken a look at the port forwarding concept and it seems to be that they’ll be releasing the firmware soon – which is great and it puts a smile on gamers face as finally they can play and host games without a problem (or a hitch)

So Maxis , try to improvise your service. Oh yeah just to let my readers know – I am not going to buy the iPhone 3G at all as I think that its not worth it (the package) , as it seem to be overpriced.

Securing your WiFi – How and Why

This is one of my mini-series or I should say my mini-how to. Its not going to be long winded as like last time. First of all , you must be overwhelmed when you first bought your Wireless Router. Imagine , connecting to the Internet without wires and you could proudly say to your mom that you’re on the World Wide Web without connecting any wires , “Hey ma , look at me – I am surfing the Web without wires” or alternatively surf the web while you’re in the WC (yeah , I know). I do have couple of tips as well !

Happy Pi Day

Today its time of the day whereby mathematicians and geeks/nerds around the world celebrate. Its the pi approximation day. As we all do know that pi starts with 3.14 , thus the day. Its celebrated around this world to honour this very constant that has changed our lives. You may not see the significance of it , but its truly important.

So I would like to wish Pi – A happy Pi (approximation) day !

Isn't pi a beauty – We use it everyday without realizing it !

If you do have time , kindly read about it in Wikipedia to know more about this mathematic constant. I do hope people see the beauty of mathematics rather then seeing it as numbers. It tells us a pattern. You’ll start to love maths once you get deep into it.

May your life be filled with constancy

iPhone 3G – Yes or No ? (The Analysis)

Two days ago , as we all do know – Maxis has launched iPhone 3G and they are taking pre-orders. I was tempted with iPhone 3G (the big hype , the cool phone and not to mention that its from Apple) , so I decided to pre-order it and to my surprise I got a conformation letter from Maxis today on the order.

iphone3g

iPhone 3G Status Order

Since I just booked the phone , I am not sure if I should go with it or just stick with my current phone (HTC P3600/Dopod D810). The iPhone certainly looks cool but I do have an iPod Touch (which is actually the iPhone minus the phone functionality). Okay , that’s for that. Now let me do the maths to see if its really worth the money to buy the phone or not

Firstly , lets take a look at the total payment that maxis will get.

  1. iPhone 3G 8GB Black  -                RM 1510
  2. 24 months * RM 100                     RM 2400
  3. SMSes (around 50 a month)    RM 120
  4. Other charges (i.e roaming)     RM 40

Grand Total RM 4,070

iPhone 3G price (approx) RM 2700

Profit by Maxis :- RM 1370

Now let us take a look if I opt for the free iPhone 8GB by registering with Maxis for 24 months

  1. iPhone 3G 8GB Black  -                RM 0
  2. 24 months * RM 375                     RM 9000
  3. SMSes (around 50 a month)    RM 120
  4. Other charges (i.e roaming)     RM 40

Grand Total RM 9160

iPhone 3G price (approx) RM 2700

Profit by Maxis :- RM 6,460 (thats a whopping RM 6000 profit)

I guess they are just trying to be smart (as usual , if its from Maxis. They’ll try by all means to get you registered. For Instance , their broadband service. Now they are just trying to improve their image by going blog-friendly , trying to convince bloggers that they can just blog about anywhere with their Broadband service ! Oh , its one way for them to roll their capital and in order to stay in business in hard times such as this . As for me ,I am still not decided yet to go for not to go for their iPhone 3G Plans. Its a pure rip off thats for sure and not to mention that you’re unable to roll over your minutes to next month and your data usage (for instance if you haven’t used up your talk time , you can’t roll it over to next month and so on) .

What I would like is your humble opinon from my readers (do I even have a reader ?) on your thoughts. It would certainly taken into consideration

Thanks
