GTA IV (PC): Tips and Tricks in Three Easy Steps !

So yeah , as you have known that I’ve bought GTA IV and Fallout III . Both are superb games and I’ve finished both of them (Fallout 3 – Good Karma way , skipped some side quests) and GTA IV (Completed main quest + doing side quests). As we all do know that GTA IV is a very demanding game and it requires a lot of CPU power and GPU Power. Nevertheless , I am using a 3 year old Dell Dimension DIM9100 series πŸ˜› , its a Pentium D 830 3.00Ghz , 4GB DDR2 533Mhz RAM , 500GB HDD + GeForce 8600GTS 256MB GDDR3. Well basically all modern games run fine on mine its just that GTA IV is tricky.

Oh yeah , click read more if you want to know how to do it step-by-step.

Before I bought the game , I asked around in Lowyat message board and people said that Pentium D can’t even run a game and they suggest me to get a Core 2 Duo or Pentium Dual Core series so that I can play the game. I refused to listen to people’s advice , because I believe that everything and anything is possible if you put your mind to it (That is my dad’s advice anyway). So yeah I bought it and took the risk. At first glance , the game did work , well its a low fps. Let me take a screen shot for you.

GTA IV (800x600) - Medium Settings/Low Render
GTA IV (800x600) - Medium Settings/Medium Render || View Distance : 3 , Traffic Density : 20. The rest are set to 1

Now when I run the game in 1280×1024 resolution (with special parameters which I’ll explain) . (Sorry I wasn’t able to get at the same shot). I did notice that my fps is still around 13-14 fps despite the fact that its running at a higher resolution

GTA IV (1280x1024 {LCD Native}) - Medium Settings/Medium Render || View Distance : 3 , Traffic Density : 20. The rest are set to 1

Now you do notice that fps are about the same and there isn’t a drop. This shows that the CPU isn’t capable and the GPU is capable. Some may disagree with this but its a fact , this game consumes more CPU power then GPU Power. So now you may want to ask , since its possible to play (However again the performance isn’t that great). Anyway let me explain it to you how its done – In Three Easy Steps !

First you’ll have to browse to your GTA IV Folder. Usually its in

C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV

Then Right click LaunchGTAIV.exe and make a shortcut of it. If you’re bit lost , I recommend you take a look at the picture below

GTA IV - Step I
GTA IV - Step I - Right click LaunchGTAIV and hit create shortcut

After that , you may have noticed that there is a new shortcut that has been created for you. Go on , right click that shortcut and select Properties. Again if you’re bit lost or if you need a visua guideance , check out the screenshot below

GTA IV - Step 2- Right click the Shortcut to LaunchGTAIV and hit Properties

After that you should see this dialog box.

At the end of theΒ  the Target Field , simply add

“-norestrictions” (without the quotes)

So that it becomes

“I:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe”-norestrictions

Fear , not . Here is a visual guideance for you , in case if you’re lost πŸ˜›

gtaiv3
GTA IV - Step 3- Right click the Shortcut to LaunchGTAIV and hit Properties

Then all you have to do is insert the DVD in your DVD-ROM Drive and then start the game. Voila , head over to the graphics section and you can run the game at a higher resolution if you wish. Just benchmark and let me know how it goes. Feel free to comment. If you’re being adventurous , you may try this method posted in GTAForums. I recommend you to give that method a shot. It works by upscaling 800×600 textrues to fit in your native resolution , images don’t look sharp but you should gain couple of more fps !

P.S – Thanks HeHeHunter for letting me know that my blog’s previous entry hyperlink wasn’t working. Thanks again mate πŸ˜›

  1. I have nearly the same pc as you… Custom-built with Pentium D 945 3.5GHz and an 8600gt 512 overclocked. I have tried almost every tweak out there and I know the game has been capable of running quite well on low graphics (first time I played) but I can’t seem to reproduce those circumstances. I have used many different tweaks and some of them have worked great and others have not… Regardless the game still runs between 14-19 fps at 1680×1050 or 800×600. What can I do to try to maybe offload some cpu usage from the game? I hope that doesn’t mean rewriting the game code which I cannot do… A new motherboard and cpu would be too expensive for me too… Are you playing on VISTA or XP? 64bit or 32bit? Maybe I can do something to my OS to offload more threads for use with GTA?
